Dr Rita Sum

Dr Sum Wing Man Rita is currently an Associate Consultant Optometrists at the School of Optometry of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). She graduated from the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Optometry programme at PolyU in 2006. As a lifelong learner, Dr Sum received her Master of Science in Optometry (with Distinction and on the Dean’s Honours List) and Doctor of Health Science (Optometry) at PolyU in 2013 and 2019 respectively. She also received the Fellowship of the American Academy of Optometry by examination in 2010 to dedicate herself to the highest standards of optometric practice through clinical care, education and research. Dr Sum joined SO as an Optometrist upon successful completion of the two-year Residency Programme at SO in 2008. She progressed from an Optometrist, to Senior Optometrist in 2011 and to the current position overseeing the administration and operation of the Optometry Clinic on PolyU campus and two community centres in Lai King and Sik Sik Yuen in 2018.

Dr Sum is an all-round alumna who has made substantial contributions to the community and the profession as well as to nurture the next generation of Optometrists. Dr Sum is a remarkable player in leading community projects such as the Vision Hong Kong, diabetic retinopathy screening and the Kwai Tsing Signature Project which collaborated with the Kwai Tsing Safe Community and Healthy City Association and Princess Margaret Hospital. These projects not only benefited over 20,000 needy people, but also paved the foundation for Kwai Tsing to succeed in bidding for the establishment of a District Health Centre in the district in 2019. More importantly, Dr Sum’s dedicated effort has helped to raise the public’s awareness of primary eye care and foster the development of primary eye care in the public sector.
 
Dr Sum is very passionate about serving the profession. She served as the Councilor of The Hong Kong Society of Professional Optometrists (HKSPO) from 2015 to 2019 and has been serving a Member since 2006. She is very keen to pass on her knowledge and philosophy to younger Optometrists through invited talks to members of the optometric associations including HKSPO and The Hong Kong Association of Private Practice Optometrists. Dr Sum also actively bids for competitive grants including the General Research Fund (GRF), the Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF), and HMRF Research Fellowship Scheme, which help to inform health policies, improve population health, and enhance healthcare practices. She succeeded in securing one GRF, three HMRFs and one HMRF Research Fellowship Scheme as the Co-I.
