Call for Nominations - Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU School of Optometry 2022

The School of Optometry of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, formerly known as the Department of Diagnostic Sciences and Department of Radiography and Optometry, was established in 1978. The School of Optometry has been committed to pursuing quality teaching and undertaking impactful research with the dedicated efforts of competent faculty members, clinical staff, and researchers. Our Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Optometry and Doctor of Health Science (Optometry) programmes as well as on-campus teaching clinic are recognized as among the best in Asia. Over the past four decades, the School has nurtured over 1,400 graduates to promote and deliver high-quality vision care to the community. The Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU School of Optometry aims to give public recognition to the outstanding graduates for their professional achievements and significant contributions to the community and their alma mater. Student Award Ceremony 2020/21

The School of Optometry held the Student Award Ceremony 2020/21 on 26 August 2021 to present 13 awards to 11 undergraduate students in recognition of their outstanding academic performance. At the ceremony, Prof. Maurice Yap, Chair Professor of Optometry and K.B. Woo Family Professor in Optometry of the School, congratulated the awardees and appreciated all the donors for their generous contribution. With donors’ continuous support, students could broaden their exposure to various learning experiences and be encouraged to excel in dispensing, practice management, academic performance and research. By the end of the ceremony, Miss Chan Hiu Tung Toby, Year 5 student representative, shared her delightful study journey throughout the years. White Coat Ceremony 2021

The School of Optometry held the White Coat Ceremony 2021 on 26 August, in which 44 Year 4 students in optometry took the optometric oath to uphold professional ethics and conducts throughout their clinical placement and career. Under the witness of faculty members, mentors and peers, the Year 4 students were conferred white coats by their academic advisors, which signify their entrance into the eye care profession. Prof. George Woo, Emeritus Professor and Senior Advisor, reminded students in his opening remarks that the white coat symbolizes clinical service and patient care. Students should bear the profession's responsibilities and assume their obligations by using the professional knowledge they have learned to serve the public after receiving the white coat. The White Coat Ceremony has been organized since 2015, which aims to highlight the symbolic importance of the white coat for a clinician. The fourth-year optometry students will start their clinical training in the future two years after the ceremony. More photos on Facebook.

Summer Programme for Secondary School Students 2021

Approximately 80 Form 5 students from 42 local secondary schools participated in the Summer Programme organized by the School respectively on 28 July and 4 August, 2021. Participants learned various eye diseases and eye care knowledge through the workshop on vision sciences and interactive sessions. They toured the Optometry Clinic, Optometry Research Clinic and affiliated teaching and learning facilities in PolyU, in a meanwhile, the School academic faculty and resident optometrists shared their experience, it enables participants have a comprehensive understanding of the optometry undergraduate programme and grasp the direction of future professional development. 16 participants further to join the extended experiential activity on 18 August 2021. After the training, they collaborated with our optometry students to provide a vision screening service to the underprivileged. The extended activity not only provided participants an opportunity to contribute their acquired knowledge but also arouse public awareness in eye health in the community.

PolyU JUPAS Consultation Day 2021: Admissions Strategies

“PolyU JUPAS Consultation Day 2021: Admissions Strategies" was successfully held on 22 May. Over 140 participants joined the programme information seminar as well as the live consultation session organized by the School of Optometry. During the Consultation Day, Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) applicants had ample opportunity to understand the entrance requirements, curriculum and programme features, and career prospect of the BSc (Hons) in Optometry programme.

Launch of the first MOOC about Visual Function and Eye Health on edX

A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) developed by PolyU School of Optometry about vision science, the first of its kind on the edX platform, is now open for enrolment. Develop your understanding of vision and discover how visual functions relate to your daily life. Learn and apply techniques to help you take better care of your eyes. The course consists of 6 modules including structures and functions of the eye, the resolution of the eye, depth perception, colour vision, common eye conditions and how to protect your eyes. Whether you have a background in vision science or not, you are more than welcome to join. The first run of the course will start on 31 May! Dr Peter Pang Delivered Online Talk on Amblyopia Treatment at HK SciFest 2021

Invited by Hong Kong SciFest 2021, Dr Peter Pang, Associate Consultant Optometrist, delivered an online lecture on “Amblyopia treatment: transition from occlusion to virtual reality” on 10 April 2021. In this talk, Dr Pang introduced the cause and symptoms of amblyopia and the latest treatment methods, including binocular training. The talk was well received by about 80 attendees.
