Cherry Tsui

Exchange period: 19 July – 16 August 2024

The University of Melbourne, Australia

The Exchange Program provided diverse clinical exposures, allowing me to handle cases independently in general and pediatric clinics. I appreciate the trust placed in us and the opportunity to consolidate my knowledge and clinical skills. Supervisors shared their clinical mindsets, and I valued the problem-solving approach. Each case enhanced my flexibility and critical thinking skills. Supervisors also demonstrated that effective communication with patients is crucial for patient-centered care and shared decision-making.

My most memorable moment was during a hospital session co-managed by an ophthalmologist. I conducted pre-cataract exams, with ophthalmologists accepting or rejecting surgery based on my findings. My patient was an 84-year-old avid reader struggling with her eye condition. I empathetically presented her challenges with tangible findings, and the doctor scheduled her surgery in three months, a relatively short wait in the public sector. Seeing her smile after receiving the good news was heartwarming. It was the first time I realized my effort could be rewarding, and even life-changing.

I am grateful for the program, which broadened my knowledge and allowed me to build connections with Unimelb students. The one-month exchange program had a lasting impact on my life, and I appreciate the inspiration and skills I gained.
