In this seminar, we will discuss approaches to defining, supporting and recognising teaching excellence within our institutions, drawing on a framework that defines elements of teaching excellence, along with examples from both the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto. We will also showcase how we are supporting faculty members to experiment with digital tools such as generative AI, to understand where such tools can be successfully deployed in a range of courses and disciplines.
About the Speakers
Professor Simon Bates is Vice-Provost and Associate Vice President, Teaching and Learning at the University of British Columbia and a tenured Professor of Teaching in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. As well as overseeing UBC’s Academic Integrity Hub, he is academic lead for the institutional response to integrating generative AI tools into academic offerings. Over the past year, he has been involved in a number of networks and collaborations considering some of the benefits and challenges these tools pose within Higher Education, including contributing to a pan-Canadian network of institutions and as Academic Lead for the APRU ‘Generative AI in Education’ project.
Professor Susan McCahan is the Associate Vice-President & Vice-Provost, Digital Strategies, and the Vice-Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education at the University of Toronto. She is also the Provostial Special Advisor on Artificial Intelligence, and a full professor in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering. Prof. McCahan is leading the development of a University strategy on AI including in areas related to teaching and learning, operations, and research.
