To facilitate the joint supervision of part-time PhD students and strengthen connections between academia and industry, the Graduate School (GS) has established a Joint PhD Programme (“the Programme”) between PolyU and the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI), building upon its existing ASTRI WORK-STUDY Programme (PhD).

Features

Students under the Programme (“Participating Student”) will:

  1. be part-time PhD students at PolyU while working full-time at ASTRI, integrating their studies with practical, real-world research;
  2. be jointly supervised by a Chief Supervisor from PolyU and a co-supervisor from ASTRI;
  3. benefit from the Programme’s non-binding arrangement, ensuring that the termination of studies at PolyU or employment with ASTRI does not adversely affect the other; and
  4. enjoy flexible work locations that accommodate both academic and professional commitments.

Eligibility

Participating Students must:

  • be registered as part-time PhD students at PolyU in the disciplines of engineering and science; and
  • be regular full-time employees of ASTRI.

Application and Admission

PolyU accepts application for its PhD programmes throughout the year. ASTRI staff who have obtained approval for participating in the Programme may submit their PhD applications through the RPgAdmission System. Applicants will undergo PolyU’s PhD admission process and are required to meet the admission requirements. For details on applying for PhD studies at PolyU, please refer to https://www.polyu.edu.hk/gs/prospective-students/how-to-apply/.

Current part-time PhD students interested in joining ASTRI and the Programme should consult with GS and ASTRI individually.

Additional Information

Please refer to the guideline for detailed information about the Programme including application information, admission requirements, financial and other Programme arrangements.
