International PhD Fellowship Scheme

The International PhD Fellowship Scheme (IPFS) aims to attract and recruit high-calibre international students to pursue full-time PhD studies at PolyU. The University plans to offer 20 places each academic year through a rigorous and competitive selection process.

Eligibility

The IPFS is open to high-calibre international PhD applicants. In addition to meeting the university entrance requirements and English language requirements for PhD programmes, the applicants should have achieved excellent academic results from a reputable university and demonstrate research ability/potential, leadership abilities and potential to contribute to the internationalisation of the University.

Scholarship Package

Successful applicants will receive an attractive scholarship package for the entire normal study period:

  • Annual Stipend: HK$226,080
       HK$231,240 for PhD students who have confirmed registration

  • Conference Grant of HK$25,000
  • Research Excellence Scholarship in the form of a tuition fee waiver
  • Cash Award may be allocated to outstanding applicants
    HK$40,000 in Year 1; HK$20,000 per year in the remaining normal study period

Application Procedures and Period

Eligible candidates can apply for the IPFS in the 2025/26 Admission Exercise via the RPgAdmission:

  • Select IPFS in the Fellowship and Scholarship
  • There are two rounds of selection per year
  • - First round application deadline: 1 December 2024 23:59 HKT (GMT +8 hours)

    - Second round application deadline: 1 April 2025 23:59 HKT (GMT +8 hours)

  • To provide yourself with the best chance at being selected for a fellowship, applicants applying for the IPFS in the first round (application deadline: 1 December 2024) are strongly encouraged to apply also for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme.

Selection Guidelines

Applications are assessed holistically based on a combination of academic merit, research experience, and alignment with the University’s strategic goals.

Fellowships are awarded to the highest-ranked applicants in the round and the number of fellowships offered in each round is subject to funding availability.
