Professor CK Wong is Senior Research Fellow, New Paradigm Foundation; Senior Honorary Fellow, Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Adjunct Professor, Social Work Department, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies, Lingnan University of Hong Kong; and Member, Special Committee on Elderly Housing, Housing Society. Professor Wong is a leading social policy expert on East Asia. He has conducted ground-breaking comparative welfare studies especially in East Asian welfare, research on welfare attitudes and policy, poverty line and poverty alleviation measures in Hong Kong. He has written extensively on the dilemmas faced by the Western democratic system.
In this lecture, Professor Wong explores the challenges faced by modern democracies, particularly in Western countries, and compares them with ancient and contemporary forms. The lecture emphasizes the importance of balancing rights and duties, the procedural focus of Western democracies, and the influence of political parties on governance.
