Topic Overview:

This lecture, conducted by RISA/PAIR, will provide an overview of recent innovations and applications of cutting-edge technologies for smart ageing. The session will cover novel approaches for disease and health condition screening, monitoring, assessment, invention, rehabilitation, among elderly people, enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI), robots, imaging and sensing techniques, etc. In addition to lecturing, participants will also be engaged in expert-led discussions on how to make elderly people and their carers benefit more from the latest advancement of technologies.

  1. Overview of Global Challenges of Ageing Population
    • Challenges caused by ageing populations and actions taken in different countries and regions
    • Ageing-related diseases and health conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, fall, sarcopenia, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, speech and swallowing disorders, pain, etc
  2. Recent Technology Advancements for Healthy Ageing
    • Monitoring techniques using sensors, imaging and IoT, for fall prevention and alarming, vital signs, etc.
    • Cognitive and physical training assisted with AR/VR and robotics
    • Smart companion dolls and pets
    • AI-empowered screening, assessment, and invention for different diseases
  3. Technology Literacy Issues in Healthy Ageing
    • Discussion on the gaps between the technology advancement and the adoption of technology for smart ageing, and gerontechnology application among elderly people living under different statuses and in different regions
    • Group activity: Designing innovative approaches for helping a certain ageing-related disease, which can overcome health literacy issues

 

Teaching Format:

This session will include expert-led presentations, interactive discussions, and problem-solving practices. Participants will critically discuss how to maximise the potential applications of recent technology advancements for supporting elderly people and their careers.
