Project Title
Refractive Error Detection Through AI and Smartphone Technology
Synopsis
This research aims to develop an eye health checking and myopia detection system/ app that allows people to check their eye situation for themselves and their family members at home easily. This technology will be executed as follows: first set up the smart phone with a suitable fixed distance with the user, and adjust the angle between the camera, flash light and the user’s eyes. Then let the user to close his/ her eyes to let the pupil size increase, and once heard the instruction sound from the smart phone system/ app, the user should open their eyes. At this moment, the flash light will also be triggered and image of the user’s eye will be captured. Finally, the machine learning/ deep learning algorithm will analysis the images and output the results (such as refractive error value) to the user. This research will focus on developing the key technology, deep learning algorithms with different model structures for eye images classifying task, by the data that collected in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Optometry Research Clinic, and ultimately inform the parents/ caregivers of the severity/ degree of myopia.
