Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Optometry

Clinical Training
PolyU School of Optometry provides comprehensive and intensive clinical training to our students. Our fourth and fifth year students will be rotated to Primary Eye Care Clinic, Contact Lens Clinic, Paediatric and Visual Training Clinic, Geriatric and Vision Rehabilitation Clinic, and Ocular Health Clinic. These clinics are located at 3 different sites – The Optometry Clinic on the PolyU campus, the Integrated Community Health Centre in Lai King, and Sik Sik Yuen – The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Optometry Centre (Wong Tai Sin Teaching and Learning Centre). Under the guidance of our academic and clinical staff, students gain real experience in the investigation, diagnosis and management of vision problems and eye diseases.

The School has been proactively collaborating with local ophthalmologists and counterparts around the world to provide students with hands-on experience, preparing them for their future careers in optometry.

Students’ Clinical Exposure in China
Since 2022, the School collaborates with Aier Eye Hospital Group by providing our Optometry students clinical training in Aier’s eye hospitals and clinics in mainland China and overseas. Clinical training cooperation between PolyU and Aier has been in place since 2017.

Ruby Wing Lam WONG, 2025 Class

My groupmates and I visited Aier Eye Hospital in Eastern Shenzhen from March 24 to March 29, 2025, for clinical placement. The hospital offers various specialty services, including refractive surgery, dry eye treatment, child vision care, and glaucoma. To broaden our experience, we rotated through different specialties daily. The ophthalmologists demonstrated professionalism, particularly Dr Ng, who responsibly explained clinical findings and patiently answered patients' questions. He analyzed the pros and cons of dry eye treatments based on individual conditions, emphasizing patient-centered care, which is crucial in clinical management. I also learned about prescription adjustment through case studies. Ms. Chan, the optometrist, shared her experiences with prescription adjustments, discussing both failures and successes, and provided insights on managing similar situations in the future. The clinical rotation at Aier Hospital was highly educational, offering Optometry students valuable knowledge beyond the classroom.

Cherry Pui Hang TSUI, 2025 Class

Doctors at Aier Eye Hospital exemplified patient-centered care by patiently explaining conditions and management options. I particularly enjoyed my time in the optometry department, where optometrists specialized in binocular vision and myopia control. They provided case studies to enhance my knowledge, and I was impressed by innovative myopia control products like diffusion optics technology spectacles and myopic defocus screen projectors. I am grateful to Dr Dan Kang and Dr Teduo Yang. Dr Kang, a glaucoma and cataract specialist, patiently explained each case to me. I also attended a case conference with other ophthalmologists, which was a fruitful afternoon of active discussion and a valuable opportunity to review my pathology knowledge. Dr Yang offered helpful feedback on my presentations, enriching my learning experience.

I was fortunate to attend a conference with Prof. Jing Sima, where a new cataract surgery technology, SMART, was introduced. This experience offered insights into the dynamic nature of eyecare practice and highlighted the hard work practitioners invest in safeguarding public health, showcasing professionalism beyond the clinic.

Dr Jianhua Chen demonstrated exceptional surgical skills, making his session one of the most fulfilling. A young patient with acute angle closure glaucoma, due to retinal detachment complications, experienced immediate relief after Dr Chen performed corneal acupuncture. His expertise in clinical diagnosis inspired us to become familiar with our clinical setups to fully utilize our professional knowledge.

Dr Jin Xu, an expert in strabismic surgery, provided a meaningful session where I learned about surgery protocols beyond the optometric scope. As a leading strabismic surgeon, he instilled confidence in managing strabismic patients, leaving a lasting impact on my future practice.
