Introduction

Data science (DS) and artificial intelligence (AI) are rapidly growing fields with enormous potential for innovation and societal impact. To position The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) as a leader in the said fields, the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) was officially established in July 2024.

 

DSAI will foster a culture of multidisciplinary, data-driven research and innovation. We will encourage faculty members and students to conduct cutting-edge research in six areas: Machine Learning and Optimization, Big Data Analytics and Management, Speech and Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision and Graphics, AI for Science, and AI for Healthcare. By pushing the boundaries of knowledge in these critical areas, DSAI aims to advance the DS and AI fields. Leveraging the power of data-driven insights and emerging technologies, we are poised to tackle many pressing societal challenges - from revolutionizing healthcare and transforming financial systems to accelerating scientific discovery and promoting environmental sustainability.

Machine Learning and Optimization

In the era of unprecedented data availability and complex decision-making processes, the fields of Machine Learning and Optimization have emerged as crucial pillars for driving innovation and addressing multifaceted challenges across various domains. Our research in Machine Learning and Optimization aims to harness the transformative potential of these disciplines to tackle intricate problems and unlock new possibilities. Machine Learning, with its ability to extract meaningful insights from vast datasets, has revolutionized decision-making, pattern recognition, and predictive modeling. Optimization, on the other hand, provides powerful tools for maximizing efficiency, resource allocation, and problem-solving in diverse contexts. By integrating these two fields, we seek to push the boundaries of knowledge and advance the frontiers of research and application. Our research endeavors will encompass developing novel machine learning algorithms and optimization techniques to address complex problems with real-world impact. Big Data Analytics and Management

In today's digital age, the world is generating an unprecedented amount of data, presenting both challenges and opportunities across various sectors. The field of Big Data Analytics and Management has emerged as a critical area of research, focusing on the efficient management, analysis, and utilization of vast and complex datasets. This research domain plays a pivotal role in addressing the evolving needs of industries, governments, and society at large.
