Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

Through the programme, students will pursue in-depth studies of topics that are related to their civil engineering field or broaden their knowledge of civil engineering by studying topics that are beyond their present field.

We are keen to develop students’ capabilities of designing engineered systems or processes to meet desired needs in civil engineering projects within realistic constraints.

Our programme is designed to cultivate students’ strategic thinking skills in dealing with complex problems and situations pertinent to their professional practice, and to enhance their learning capabilities for continual professional development through inquiry and reflection on professional practice.

Characteristics

In this programme, practising civil engineers can pursue in-depth studies and acquire specialised skills in general civil engineering, structural engineering and transportation engineering. Graduates should be able to demonstrate a high degree of competence in modern construction technology after completion of the programme.

Curriculum

Programme Structure

This is a mixed-mode programme. Students can pursue their studies in either full-time or part-time mode.  The programme will normally be completed in 1 year for full-time study or in 2.5 years for part-time study depending on the pace of study of individual student. Students are required to attend classes in daytime and evening if they choose the full-time mode.

Students must complete 10 subjects (including at least 7 Core Subjects and at most 3 Elective Subjects), or 7 subjects (including at least 4 Core Subjects and at most 3 Elective Subjects) plus a 9-credit Dissertation and 1-credit Academic Integrity and Ethics (AIE) subject.

Part-time students are strongly advised not to take more than 3 subjects per semester due to heavy study load.

Student Message

I completed the part-time MSc in Civil Engineering programme offered by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering with distinction. The programme offered me a chance to pursue in-depth studies in the civil engineering field and broaden my knowledge beyond my present job. Through the programme, I had a chance to explore the areas of seismic design and wind engineering. I also learned about the innovative techniques used in the industry. The programme has definitely helped me move further in my career.
