Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

The programme provides EITHER (1) studies of a conversion nature for graduates without formal environmental qualifications who are working or who would like to work in the environmental protection field OR (2) studies of an in-depth nature for graduates who already possess a Bachelor's qualification in environmental science or engineering.

The programme provides students with engineering and management knowledge to tackle environmental engineering problems in the field of construction and industrial and infrastructure development and to confront challenges related to sustainable development and the achievement of carbon neutrality.

Characteristics

This programme, which offers both in-depth and conversion study, is suitable for both graduates and professionals with previous qualifications who wish to gain advanced knowledge of environmental engineering and management or to diversify their expertise into the environmental fields. It allows students the flexibility to choose environmental engineering, environmental management and carbon neutrality subjects to build up their knowledge in line with their specific needs.

Curriculum

Programme Structure

This is a mixed-mode programme.  Students can pursue their studies in either full-time or part-time mode.  The programme will normally be completed in 1 year of full-time study or in 2.5 years of part-time study, depending on the pace of the individual student.  Students are required to attend classes in the daytime and evening if they choose the full-time mode.

Students must complete 10 subjects (including at least 7 Core Subjects and at most 3 Elective Subjects) or 7 subjects (including at least 4 Core Subjects and at most 3 Elective Subjects) plus a 9-credit Dissertation and a 1-credit Academic Integrity and Ethics (AIE) subject.

Part-time students are strongly advised not to take more than 3 subjects per semester because of the heavy study load.

Student Message

The MSc in Environmental Management and Engineering programme has equipped me with the theoretical and practical knowledge to tackle environmental engineering problems and improve my effectiveness in environmental management.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers a comprehensive learning experience to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. I was given an opportunity to join the SAKURA Exchange Program to visit National Yokohama University in Japan. During the visit, Japanese students discussed their experiences regarding disaster prevention, which was valuable for my professional and personal growth. In addition to gaining knowledge and experience, I have expanded my network in the field by meeting many professional practitioners through the course.

Koey Ko

This programme has been an enlightening journey for me, paving the way for my career in the ESG industry. It has provided me with a solid foundation in environmental management and sustainable development, honed my ability to think independently and greatly facilitated my comprehension of international ESG standards. It has also enabled me to participate in ESG performance improvement projects in a manufacturing company to advance the planning of environmental performance. In addition to professional growth, the PolyU alumni network provides instrumental support that has paved the way for my career development.

Zhiying Deng

My experience in the MSc in Environmental Management and Engineering programme at PolyU, supported by the entry scholarship, was truly transformative. The programme provided me with a robust foundation of knowledge and invaluable hands-on research experience. Numerous field studies integrated into our coursework gave me practical insights that textbooks alone can't provide. I also joined a faculty research group to work on the development of nanomaterials for air pollution removal. These experiences enhanced my research skills and deepened my understanding of complex environmental issues. The expert faculty, state-of-the-art facilities and emphasis on innovative thinking prepared me well for my PhD application and subsequent studies in the United States. PolyU's global perspective, rigorous academic environment and focus on practical application fostered my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are crucial for advanced research. I'm grateful for the unique opportunities that the CEE at PolyU has afforded me.
