A Vibrant Ceremony to Kick-off the Limitless Festival 2024

PolyU Student Affairs Office has successfully organised a vibrant ceremony on 1 Feb to kick off this year's Limitless Festival. This annual campaign aims to promote inclusion awareness on campus and celebrate the diverse abilities within PolyU. With the participation of nearly 100 enthusiastic students, staff and guests, the atmosphere was electric! The presence and support of all the participants make the event a resounding success. The ceremony is just a start of the excitement.  There is a series of incredible activities, including: SEN Drama: Stories and Struggles of SEN Students Mental Health First Aid Certificate Course Foot Painting Workshop Building Connections: Exploring Self-Awareness and Career Path with LEGO SERIOUS PLAY Inclusive Sports Experience Understanding Disabilities via Treasure Hunt Latte Art Workshop Dialogue in Silence and in the Dark Sharing on Universal Design for Learning These engaging events and workshops are designed to foster a culture of appreciation for diverse abilities and encourage inclusivity within our PolyU community.

"INSPIRE" Mentorship Programme Annual Gathering 2023

The “INSPIRE” Mentorship Programme Annual Gathering 2023 was held on 12 January 2024 at Hotel ICON. Around 260 mentors and mentees came together, united by the invaluable experience of their mentoring journeys.   The Gathering opened with a celebratory toast from PolyU’s Council members, Court members (also mentors) and senior management. During the event, mentors Mr Andy Wong and Ms Wendy Man, and their respective mentees Ms Leung Oi Lam Corrina and Ms Cheung Man Ying Connie, shared their journeys of discovery with the “INSPIRE” community.   Participating on the “INSPIRE” journey, the mentors played the triple roles of an advisor, life coach and role model to the mentees, with a view to broadening the students’ horizons and enhancing their growth. PolyU holds 2024 New Year’s Day flag-raising ceremony

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) held a flag-raising ceremony on 1 January 2024 to welcome the New Year. PolyU Council Chairman Dr LAM Tai-fai, President Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, Deputy Council Chairman Dr Lawrence LI Kwok-chang, President Emeritus Prof. the Honourable POON Chung-kwong, Emeritus Professor (Structural Engineering) Prof. Jan-ming KO, together with Council and Court members, University senior management, University Fellows, Outstanding Alumni, members of the PolyU Foundation, distinguished guests, staff, students and alumni attended the ceremony, wishing the Nation and Hong Kong prosperity and stability. The ceremony was performed by the PolyU Student Flag-Raising Team. Dr Lam Tai-fai said, “Over the past year, Hong Kong has advanced towards a new stage, moving from stability to prosperity, with the economy showing gradual recovery and society restoring its stability. We are also pleased to see the District Council Election concluded successfully, which strengthens the implementation of the ‘patriots administering Hong Kong’ principle. In 2024, PolyU will harness its strengths in education, research and knowledge transfer, while rendering its full support to the HKSAR government in integrating itself into the overall development of the Nation and fully capitalising on our distinctive advantages of strong support from the Motherland and close connection to the world under the principle of ‘One Country, Two Systems’, working hand in hand with our country to create a better future.” Prof. Jin-Guang Teng remarked, “With the aspiration to be an innovative world-class university, PolyU is committed to nurturing socially responsible talents who possess a strong sense of national identity and a global perspective, and to pursuing impactful research and innovation to address societal needs. As the new year begins, we will continue to strive for excellence, support the development of Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology hub, and contribute to the advancement of our Nation, as guided by our motto: ‘To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind’.”

PolyU Students and Researchers Awarded in The First Greater Bay Area Data Application Innovation Competition

PolyU achieved outstanding results in The First Greater Bay Area Data Application Innovation Competition, winning several First Prizes, Second Prizes, Technical Excellence Awards, Creative Excellence Awards, Outstanding Awards, and Data (Commodity) Listing Certificates. In addition, PolyU also received the Outstanding Contribution Award and Excellent Organization Award, and Prof Xiao Fu, Associate Dean and Professor of the Faculty of Construction and Environment, is honoured with the Outstanding Guidance Teacher Award in this competition. The competition was jointly organized by the Development and Reform Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, the Government Services and Data Management Bureau of Shenzhen, and The People's Government of Futian District. It aims to create a top-level platform in the field of data elements and build an innovative, open, and prosperous ecosystem for data application developers. Additionally, the competition is expected to fully open the data resources, computing power facilities, and trading platforms of the Greater Bay Area Data AI Center and Shenzhen Data Exchange, providing a top-notch communication platform for data developers. It also encourages data developers to unleash their imagination and innovation in order to discover outstanding projects and cultivate talents in data application innovation. The competition consists a creative design competition and a technical challenge competition, covering six application scenarios including digital decision-making, smart supply chain, technology finance, digital energy, intelligent manufacturing, and smart cities. Universities, research institutions, and enterprises actively participated in the competitionAmong them, 227 teams entered the preliminary round, and 35 teams advanced to the finals. A total of 19 teams were awarded first, second, and third prizes, including PolyU, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Sun Yat-sen University, and South China University of Technology. Congratulations to all PolyU's winning teams for the outstanding performance and providing innovative, practical, and technologically advanced solutions in data application.

Two students received The D. H. Chen Foundation Scholarship 2023/24

Winnie Cheng and Edwin Lam from the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences received The D. H. Chen Foundation (DHCF) Scholarship 2023/24. The Award Presentation Ceremony was held in November 2023. Dr Eric Tam and Dr T. L. Yip, Associate Deans of Students together with six other DHCF Scholars attended the Ceremony to show their support to the two 2023 awardees. With the vision to nurture compassionate and insightful leaders who drive positive social changes, the Scholarship Program offers comprehensive support to enhance the Scholars’ professional knowledge, personal insights and social aspirations. Each year, a maximum of 20 scholarships will be granted to local undergraduate degree students from the five Partner Universities, including PolyU. Each scholarship includes tuition waiver, means-tested living allowance and overseas learning allowance.

Rowing Club topping Womens Eight 1

Rowing Club topping Women’s Eight in the Xiangshan Rowing Regatta

Big applause to PolyU SAO Rowing Club topping Women’s Eight in the Xiangshan Rowing Regatta (Qianshan River) 2023 held in Zhuhai over the last weekend, 25 Nov 2023. Hengqin Tinmuk Rowing Invitational Regatta is one of the most popular inter-university rowing contests, with its origin dating back to the 19th century. This year, PolyU SAO Rowing Club was honoured to be invited to take part in the rowing competition, among rowing teams from 14 institutions from local and overseas, including Tsinghua University and Yale University. What’s more livening-up is the news that PolyU SAO Rowing Club scored championship in Women’s Eight in the Xiangshan Rowing Regatta (Qianshan River), being the only university from HKSAR awarded the crown. Welcome Deputy Commissioner Fang Jianming to the Exchange with PolyU students

The Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong SAR organised a seminar with around 200 staff and students in attendance on PolyU campus on 24 November 2023. Our President Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, Vice-President (Student and Global Affairs) Prof. Ben Young, and Dean of Students Prof. Albert Chan, along with the university management, warmly welcomed the delegation, led by the honourable guest speaker of the event Deputy Commissioner Fang Jianming. Under the topic of “Current International Situation and China’s Diplomacy,” Deputy Commissioner Fang Jianming provided a comprehensive overview of the current international situation and the major changes unseen in a century. He decoded the four dimensions of China’s major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics, which include its overall objectives, basic principles, key focus areas, and important cooperation platforms. He also expressed his welcome for PolyU and other tertiary institutions in Hong Kong to expand their cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative. In his address, President Teng expressed gratitude to Deputy Commissioner Fang Jianming for sharing his insights and perspectives with the attending students and staff of PolyU. He highlighted PolyU’s commitment to nurturing the younger generation as pillars of society who contribute to the development of Hong Kong and the nation. The President expressed his hope that the seminar would enhance the understanding of the attendees about the country and the world. The President then took a photo with Deputy Commissioner Fang Jianming and conveyed heartfelt appreciation for the longstanding support by the Commissioner’s Office for PolyU. 香港明德會「2023香港傑出大學生選舉」 (In Chinese Only)

現攻讀理大的企業信息管理(榮譽)理學士學位課程的洪浩馳同學在香港明德會舉辦的「2023香港傑出大學生選舉」中獲選為「傑出大學生」!洪同學課餘時間亦熱心公益事務,體現了理大的全人教育精神。 由香港明德會籌辦的「2023香港傑出大學生選舉」選拔活動圓滿結束,頒獎典禮已於2023年11月11日順利舉行,由前任教育局局長吳克儉擔任頒獎嘉賓,嘉許得奬學生的傑出表現。 是次活動吸引逾200名大專學生報名參加。參加者經過甄選後分別選出十名傑出大學生和十名優秀大學生。獲選學生背景各有不同,他們都在不同領域中積極參與社會服務,以自身所長貢獻社會。有別於傳統的學生選舉,參賽者獲得體驗式學習的機會,在2023年6至8月期間參加香港明德會舉辦的一系列多元化活動,例如義工活動、可持續發展項目及能力提升工作坊等。 在此恭喜洪浩馳同學!

Youth Development Blueprint Sharing Session

We were delighted to have Mr Leung Wang Ching, Clarence, BBS, JP, Under Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, to deliver a talk at the Youth Development Blueprint Sharing Session held on 7 November. The crowd of students and staff enjoyed the fruitful afternoon with Mr Leung’s insightful presentation. Mr Leung presented a detailed overview of the Youth Development Blueprint, which was set out by the government. The blueprint focuses on four chapters of youth development: Exploration, Hope, Empowerment, and Contribution. Students and staff had the opportunity to delve deeper into the implications of the blueprint for their own growth and development. Prof. Albert Chan, Dean of Students of PolyU, expressed his appreciation for Mr Leung’s inspirational speech. He highlighted the significance of the blueprint in nurturing the youth with positive values and attitudes under the perspective of holistic education.

President Sharing Session with Students

To facilitate continuous communication between students and the University’s Management, the first President’s Sharing Session of the academic year 2023/24 took place on 27 October 2023. Around 60 students participated in the session, engaging in discussions and posing questions to the management. The President’s Sharing session commenced with an informative presentation by President Teng, who provided the latest updates of the University.  Subsequently, the Vice President (Student and Global Affairs) Prof. Ben Young, shared valuable insights on student support and services offered by the University. Following these presentations, a Q&A session was conducted, allowing the management to address the students’ inquiries.  During the session, students expressed their concerns primarily regarding campus facilities, catering services, residential spaces and study-related issues. The sharing session served as a good opportunity for the management to actively listen to and comprehend the students’ concerns.
