Enhancing Emergency Preparedness: AED Drills and Training
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are crucial for helping individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. According to the Fire Services Department, “If an AED is used on a victim within 3 minutes of the sudden cardiac arrest, his survival rate is over 70%”. This highlights the importance of promptly using an AED to save lives.
Since 2009, a number of AEDs have been installed at designated locations on campus, including the Campus Control Centre, places with high public use, sports facilities, student hostels, etc. Although the device is designed to be user-friendly with clear instructions, regular on-campus AED drills are conducted to evaluate the response of the Campus Control Centre and security guards. The latest drills, involving 13 AEDs across various locations, assessed the arrival time of safety guards, their proficiency with the devices, and the condition of the AEDs, and the results were satisfactory.
In addition to training security guards, we partnered with the FSD in November 2024 to offer a “Press to Shock - Save a Life” CPR & AED course for staff members. This training covered first-aid fundamentals and provided hands-on experience with CPR and AED use. Participants found the course highly valuable because of its well-structured sessions that enhanced their understanding of the critical role AEDs play in emergencies. If you are interested in the course, don’t miss out on the upcoming session in February 2025!
