PolyU research students shone at the 10th International Conference of Asian Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (ASPEN 2023). Dr LIANG Xiaoliang and Mr ZHANG Canbin, a postdoctoral fellow and a PhD student from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, respectively, and the supervisor, Ir Prof. Benny C. F. CHEUNG from the same department, collaborated with an industry co-author from son-x Gmbh, Germany to secure the Best Paper Award at the ASPEN 2023 for a paper titled "An Investigation on the Effects of Feature Size in Ultrasonic Vibration-assisted Sculpturing of Microlens Array." This research focused on the ultrasonic vibration-assisted ultra-precision diamond cutting. The research team demonstrates the effectiveness of ultrasonic vibration-assisted sculpturing (UVAS) in fabricating microlens arrays with small feature sizes while optimising tool clearance angle, cutting speed, and depth-of-cut can enhance machining accuracy.

At the same conference, another team of researchers from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, including postdoctoral fellow Dr ZHANG Yanbin and PhD student Mr ZHANG Fan, with the supervision of Ir Prof. CHEUNG and Prof. WANG Chunjin, Assistant Professor from the same department, received another Best Paper Award on nano-lubricant-assisted ultra-precision grinding for a paper titled "Lubrication Mechanism and Machinability of Multidimensional Mixed Nano-lubricant in Ultra-precision Grinding of Binderless Tungsten Carbide (WC)". The research team leverages nano-lubricant to improve machinability in ultra-precision grinding of tungsten carbide.

ASPEN is a union of academic and industrial societies in Asia that promotes networking and collaboration among scientists, researchers and industry partners in the region. In November, ASPEN 2023 was held in Hong Kong by PolyU, the State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology (PolyU) and the Hong Kong Society for Precision Engineering.
