Mr Edward YAN Hengzhou, Mr HE Tao, Mr TANG Jiuxing and Mr GUO Feng, PhD students, from the State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering of PolyU, won the Best Paper Award at the CHINA-JAPAN International Conference on Ultra-Precision Machining Process (CJUMP) 2023 for their co-authored paper titled “Towards sustainable development of ultra-precision machining process: a preliminary framework design of selecting ideal cooling and lubrication based on network analysis in bibliometric analysis.” The research team members were under the chief supervision of Prof. Sandy TO Suet, Professor from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and the co-supervision of Dr Lenny YIP Wai-sze, Research Assistant Professor from the same department.

This paper presents a groundbreaking framework for enhancing sustainability in ultra-precision machining. The research team employed network analysis to identify critical factors such as surface quality, tool wear, and lubrication methods that impact the sustainability of machining processes. By elucidating the interactions among these factors, the framework offers a systematic approach to selecting cooling and lubrication methods tailored to various machining settings and materials. This pioneering work not only underscores the importance of sustainable practices but also lays the groundwork for future studies to refine the framework using genetic algorithms and experimental validation. The proposed framework is set to become an invaluable resource for operators seeking to optimise sustainability in ultra-precision machining.

The CJUMP 2023 was organised by PolyU and the State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology (PolyU) in Hong Kong in October 2023. The conference addressed new developments in process technology, focusing on machine tools, instruments, and metrology for precision measurement, as well as micro- and nano-machining.
