At PolyU, innovation and technology create an academic environment that fosters national pride, social responsibility, and a global mindset. Our broad discipline scheme gives you the time and flexibility to explore various fields and allows you to make informed decisions about your preferred programme.
This broad discipline scheme aims to train future scientists and talents by providing holistic, dynamic, and pioneering innovative science-based education. During their first year of study, students can explore different scientific disciplines via experiential learning through search and discovery processes, thus cultivating their interest in scientific and technological innovations. The Common Year One curriculum equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a specific science major according to their aspirations, abilities, and interests, starting in their second year of study.
Objective:
-
To provide students with a flexible opportunity to explore the beauty of different scientific disciplines before committing to a major area of study;
-
To enrich students’ educational journey by offering them a wide variety of study options and learning experiences;
-
To cultivate in students a mindset that embraces risk-taking and creativity and thus facilitates the transformation of innovative ideas into practical applications;
-
To develop skills in analysing and proposing solutions to real-life scientific and technological problems; and
-
To provide training in intercultural communication and promote an understanding of global citizenship.
Upon completion of the BSc programme, graduates will become innovative problem solvers and effective communicators and play a vital role in the community as ethical leaders and socially responsible global citizens.
Our science major programmes offer a wide range of career opportunities and professional recognition from accreditation bodies. Please refer to the individual programme and scheme pages for more information (see the “Curriculum” section below).
The multidisciplinary, inquiry-driven, and experiment-based curriculum transforms our extraordinary students from diverse backgrounds into young scientists equipped with the advanced scientific knowledge to excel in various professions.
All admitted students will follow a Common Year One curriculum, which includes the University’s General University Requirement (GUR) subjects and tailored fundamental subjects in the fields of biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and food science. These subjects are designed to meet the needs of students from different backgrounds, providing them with a solid foundation to explore a range of scientific disciplines. After their first year of study, students can choose their preferred programme through a ranking assessment.
For more details on the curriculum of specific programmes, please refer to the individual programme and scheme pages.
Some of our programmes offer the opportunity to pursue a Secondary Major (Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE) or Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA)), allowing students to further broaden their academic and career horizons. For more details, please refer to the individual programme and scheme pages (see the “Curriculum” section above).
