Congratulations to Prof. JH Hao's group. “Coupling smart materials to metal-ion doped phosphors: luminescence tuning, mechanisms and proof-of-concept devices”, received the Second-Class Award in Natural Science of Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology) 2020.
Luminescent materials, also called phosphors, have widely applied to the fields of physics, chemistry, materials science, optoelectronics sustainable energy and biomedicine. Up to now, most studies have extensively focused on tuning the luminescence of phosphors by conventional chemical methods. Differing from conventional approach, Prof. Hao’s group has been exploring a novel route for ten years via coupling smart materials effect to metal-ion doped phosphors materials. Light-emissions of metal-ion doped phosphors are successfully tuned or generated by ferroelectric, piezoelectric, strain and magnetic-field. Moreover, various types of new conceptual multifunctional devices have been demonstrated. The innovative accomplishment has wholly been achieved within AP at PolyU. Prof. Hao has led the research field of smart phosphors. Prof. Hao is elected as a Fellow of the Optical Society (OSA Fellow) “For outstanding and pioneering contributions to multifunctional phosphors and photonic devices”. He is also elected as a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), and Fellow of Institute of Physics (FInstP).
