In almost eight decades since 1937, PolyU has evolved from the Government Trade School in Wanchai through the post-World War II Hong Kong Technical College into a thriving government-funded tertiary institution in 1994. Since then, PolyU has made great progress in institutional advancement and human resources development. Besides contributing knowledge and technology to the social cause of sustainability, it has also nurtured young talents in service to society by transforming teaching and learning.
Our 9.46-hectare Main Campus is located in Hung Hom, Hong Kong. From 1937 to 2015, more than 364,000 students graduated from PolyU, with 5,345 from our full-time programmes in 2014. As of end-2014/15, PolyU had a total of 31,864 students in both full-time and part-time academic programmes leading to PolyU awards. In the past five years, steady growth of the full-time student population was accompanied by a gradual decrease in that of part-time students. PolyU has a relatively stable body of full-time permanent staff from 2010/11 to 2014/15, with 3,534 full-time permanent staff employed as of 31 October 2014.
PolyU has 26 academic units under six faculties, namely Applied Science & Textiles, Business, Construction & Environment, Engineering, Health & Social Sciences, Humanities, and two schools (School of Design and School of Hotel and Tourism Management) and two centres. The university offers a variety of taught and research programmes at Doctorate, Master’s, Bachelor’s degrees and Higher Diploma levels, with 185 taught programmes offered in 2014/15. During 2014/15, PolyU remained at the forefront of research and innovation with over 2,800 on-going research projects, obtaining a boost in annual secured institutional and external funding from around HK$1,381.1 million in 2013/14 to HK$1,832.2 million.
The University supports quality learning, teaching and research for an expanding student population by providing world-class resources and facilities, including a library, computing facilities, independent language learning centres, classrooms, lecture theatres, workshops and laboratories. Apart from effective educational and research support, PolyU also prioritizes the wellbeing and health of our students and staff by offering catering, health services, an environmentally-friendly campus, leisure and sports facilities and welfare support.
