Prof. Christopher Chao, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, delivered an opening speech at the inauguration ceremony of the Qianhai Disruptive Technology Innovation Alliance. In interviews with numerous Mainland media outlets, Prof. Chao discussed how Hong Kong can leverage its strengths in basic research to drive disruptive technological innovation. He said basic research is very important for developing disruptive technologies, which often requires interdisciplinary efforts and a foundation of basic research.

Prof. Chao also highlighted that disruptive technologies can only impact society when they are successfully applied in practical scenarios that improve people's lives and enable businesses to implement the technologies. To achieve this, PolyU has set up research institutes in six Mainland cities to tap into different application scenarios across various fields and will continue to expand into other cities across the Nation in the near future.
