The Northern Metropolis, regarded as a new engine for injecting economic impetus into Hong Kong, has become a focal point of discussion. To explore this topic from a social innovation perspective, the Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation (J.C.DISI) hosted the “One from Hundred Thousand” Social Innovation Symposium, featuring distinguished speakers who shared their insights on community making and development in the Northern Metropolis. The event received coverage in Ming Pao and other newspapers.

Keynote speeches were delivered by Ms Bernadette Linn Hon-ho, Secretary for Development of the HKSAR Government, and Professor Ling Kar-kan, PolyU Interim Vice President (Campus Development and Facilities) and Director of J.C.DISI. Ms Linn mentioned that the northern part of Hong Kong, after its transformation into a new zone for economic growth, will become an ideal place for living, working, and commuting. Professor Ling stated that the Northern Metropolis will attract many young families and outlined the opportunities and challenges of community making in the development of this emerging area.

The keynote speakers were joined by representatives from academia, non-profit organisations, and the business sector. They engaged in discussions on urban planning, community development, and social services, aiming to foster the integration of existing and new communities to create a cohesive and vibrant Northern Metropolis.

The Symposium was part of the PolyU Jockey Club Operation SoInno Project, funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. J.C.DISI aims to become a leading institute to trigger social innovation in all dimensions of society to improve the well-being of the community and people.
