PolyU welcomes 2024 Policy Address
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) embraces the initiatives announced in the 2024 Policy Address, which aim to position Hong Kong as an international hub for post-secondary education and health and medical innovation, and an international I&T centre. Key measures in the Address include the development of the Northern Metropolis University Town, the establishment of a third medical school, the creation of the “Study in Hong Kong” brand, the expansion of research funding, and increased investment in innovation and technology (I&T) industries.
PolyU is pleased with the Government's allocation of land for the Northern Metropolis University Town and supports the establishment of a third medical school to address the challenges of an ageing population and rising chronic disease rates. With a strong foundation in health science education, PolyU has recently submitted a proposal to the Government to request land in the Northern Metropolis to establish a new medical school, aiming to become a comprehensive training hub for medical professionals. Recently, PolyU has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sun Yat-sen University to initiate education and research collaboration in interdisciplinary medicine and engineering, further underscoring the University's commitment to meeting future medical needs.
PolyU also supports the "Study in Hong Kong" brand to attract international students, particularly from ASEAN and Belt and Road countries. With over 330 overseas recruitment events in the 2023/24 academic year, PolyU continues to promote Hong Kong's unique educational strengths globally.
Professor Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU, highlighted the University's support for the Committee on Education, Technology, and Talents, which aims to promote Hong Kong as an international hub for high‑calibre talents. PolyU is dedicated to recruiting top academics and researchers and innovating its curriculum to prepare students for emerging technologies. The establishment of the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and the upcoming Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences reflect this commitment.
To support the Government’s initiative to promote the low-altitude economy (LAE) as a growth engine for new quality productive forces, PolyU is establishing a research centre for LAE to explore viable solutions for developing this sector in Hong Kong, supporting smart city development. Additionally, the University plans to launch a Master of Science programme in LAE next year to nurture talent for future industrial development.
PolyU also supports the Government’s plan to increase research funding and investment in I&T. Having established three research centres under two InnoHK clusters, PolyU welcomes the Government's plan for a third cluster focused on advanced manufacturing and sustainable development, and supports the Government's hydrogen development strategy for green energy.
