Aviation Engineering (AAE), Year 4

My time at PolyU has been the most fruitful years of my life. Here, I have embraced numerous opportunities and explored a lot of activities that have expanded my horizons. I’ve also met many inspiring individuals who have not only supported me but have also made it easier to navigate the challenges of rigorous academic times.

One of my most memorable experiences was the opportunity to go on exchange to the United States. I am thankful for this experience because it allowed me to immerse myself in diverse cultures and connect with a wide range of people from different backgrounds. The friendships and the lessons learnt during this time enriched my understanding of the world.

As I prepare to graduate from PolyU, I aspire to do my best to make the world a better place, no matter the career path I may take. I would like to encourage the next generation to keep pushing forward, no matter how hard life gets, and to seek meaning and purpose in everything you do.

Civil Engineering (CEE), Year 5

My three years of university education have been a transformative journey, characterized by a mosaic of opportunities for growth, service, and goal achievement. With a strong aspiration to become a "global engineer," I have pursued self-improvement through a multifaceted approach. Balancing rigorous academics with holistic personal development, I have built a solid foundation in civil engineering while actively seeking opportunities for refinement.

Joining Engineers Without Borders (Hong Kong) has allowed me to dedicate myself to serving communities both locally and globally. Driven by a commitment to societal betterment and sustainability, I strive to embody PolyU's motto: “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind.”

During my year-long exchange at Imperial College London, I completed my final year project on tunnel distortion and displacement under the guidance of the esteemed Prof. Jamie Standing. This academic journey has deepened my technical expertise and understanding of engineering's profound impact on our world.

Chemical Technology (AP), Year 4

My university life has been fulfilling, yet I have also overcome challenges, such as seeking a balance between lab work and schoolwork. My most memorable experiences include my summer research at Durham University in the UK, and my semester exchange at McGill University in Canada. Both of these experiences brought me invaluable friendships, broadened my perspective, and advanced my knowledge in different areas of chemistry. These two exchange experiences have also strengthened my determination to continue pursuing research in chemistry in the years to come.

In the future, I aspire to be a lifelong learner, meeting fascinating individuals and exploring different aspects of this world. While I am not sure if I am qualified enough to give advice to other students, if I have to, I would say to cherish every moment you have and make wise decisions.

HARYOTO Dominicus Dylan

HARYOTO Dominicus Dylan

Computer Science (COMP), Year 3

Since my first year, I have let my passion for business and technology lead me. I have served as the Vice President of the Google Developer Student Club, undergone an exchange study at Nanyang Technological University, participated in hackathons, and worked as an intern with medium-sized and large, international enterprises.

One memorable experience stands out: leading a team to install solar-powered electricity for over 400 households in Rwanda. This project not only impacted the community but also deepened my understanding of technology’s role in social change.

Upon graduation, I aim to pursue an MBA at Harvard Business School, focusing on leveraging technology in business to maximize social impact. My advice to fellow students is to stay focused and make the most of your time; every moment counts.

I am a firm believer that knowledge is the foundation of any ambition. This belief is rooted in my strong commitment to the 3Cs — curiosity, challenge and change — which have always been the driving force behind my quest for growth and advancement. My university life has been a transformative journey filled with challenges. Balancing academics, research, and extracurricular activities has been fulfilling, and has taught me resilience and time management.

Leading workshops to promote science, technology, and engineering (STEM) has allowed me to give back to the community and inspire others, which has been very rewarding.

Lau Cheuk Lam

LAU Cheuk Lam

Social Work (SW), Year 3

As a social work student, I am eager to investigate and address the mental health issues faced by youth in Hong Kong. Over the past year, I have participated in various courses and interacted with people suffering from mental illness, particularly youths and children.

My understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with mental illness deepened after participating in various mental health programmes. Additionally, I frequently participated in volunteer activities and served as the Youth Ambassador at Integrated Children and Youth Services Centres (ICYSC). These experiences allowed me to connect with youths and children, providing valuable insights into their struggles and knowing that many youths struggle with mental health issues they may not feel comfortable disclosing. I became aware of the stigma surrounding mental health and further motivated my commitment to advocacy for the mental health of youth in the community.

TSANG Cheung Kit

English and Linguistics (ENGL), Year 4

University life at PolyU has been a whirlwind—challenging yet incredibly rewarding. Balancing coursework with internships and research was tough, especially when working at Teach for Hong Kong and The D.H. Chen Foundation, where I contributed to advocacy campaigns and content creation. It was overwhelming at times, but seeing firsthand how education can change lives made every late night worth it. One of the biggest challenges was figuring out how to juggle everything while staying true to my passion for social impact—but I’ve learned that purpose keeps you going, even when things get tough.

A highlight of my journey was my exchange at the University of Maryland, College Park. Living abroad for the first time, I had to adapt quickly—navigating a new education system, making international friends, and even traveling solo. It wasn’t always easy, but those experiences built my independence and gave me the confidence to embrace the unknown. Whether it was deep discussions in class or spontaneous road trips, every moment shaped how I see the world today.

Looking ahead, I want to create something meaningful—an NGO that helps teenagers build mental resilience and find purpose. At the same time, I plan to become an English teacher, using education as a tool to empower students and bridge social inequalities.

If there’s one thing I’d say to other students, it’s this: say yes to things that scare you. Take on challenges, push yourself outside your comfort zone, and don’t be afraid to fail. Growth happens in those uncomfortable moments, and every risk you take now will shape the future you want.
