Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme aims to generate graduates who are forward-looking and competent occupational therapists and can promote the health and well-being of people in Hong Kong.

A combination of medical, physical, neurological, psychological, and social subjects prepares students to enhance the functional performance of community-dwelling people with disabilities in terms of self-care, leisure, and work. Students learn how to maximise occupational performance, promote health, and improve life meaningfulness and quality of life of clients, their families and caregivers.

The programme prepares students to deliver occupation-based and client-centred occupational therapy with a commitment to promoting equal opportunities for all members of the community. It also prepares students for helping careers in which they empower clients to manage their disabilities, educate the public about healthy and meaningful living and pass on their professional knowledge to new generations of therapists.

Programme Characteristics

The programme uses an outcome-based learning approach and integrates academic and clinical education. We provide numerous excellent learning resources with up-to-date technological tools, such as Web-based teaching and self-learning packages.

We also provide global learning experiences in occupational therapy: fieldwork placements and academic exchange programmes are available in the Chinese mainland and overseas.

Placement Opportunities

Clinical education is an important component of professional training and development, and it is delivered through clinical placements in various settings in Hong Kong, on the Chinese mainland, and overseas. Students undertake placements in a range of settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, childcare centres, elderly care homes, adult training centres and workshops, and long-stay care homes. Overseas clinical placements have been organised in partnership with various universities, such as Curtin University of Technology (Australia), the University of South Australia (Australia), the University of Toronto (Canada), McGill University (Canada), Metropolitan University College (Denmark), JAMK University of Applied Sciences (Finland), the University of Southern California (USA), Nanyang Polytechnic (Singapore) and Chang Gung University (Taiwan). Further overseas placements will be arranged for students in the coming years, to broaden their global perspectives.

Student Message

As a final-year student at PolyU, I am grateful that I have chosen occupational therapy as my major. I have realised that occupational therapy is a meaningful profession as it helps patients to achieve their potential and, through treatment activities, helps them return to their previous life roles. During my study, it has always been emphasised that occupational therapists should treat people holistically and care for both their psychosocial and physical health.

Although it was difficult to conduct practical lessons during the pandemic, lecturers utilised online platforms to arrange fieldwork visits and provide case videos for us so that we could develop a full picture of the occupational performance of the clients. In addition to academic and practical knowledge, I also had the opportunity to serve the community by assisting in treatment implementation for children with special education needs. This taught me how to communicate and build rapport with children. I also gained experience in research by joining the summer research studentship programme organised by the faculty. These experiences have helped me to become an well-rounded occupational therapist-to-be.

Chung Ka Wai

I am a Year 3 occupational therapist student. Time flies: I will graduate in the coming year. I am grateful to be studying towards a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Occupational Therapy at PolyU, as in addition to  learning foundational theory and practical skills, I am learning various healthy living skills, such as acupuncture, Baduanjin, and stretching exercises. These living skills are not only useful for reducing my everyday tiredness but are also helpful daily exercises that are performed by my family. The numerous student organisations and projects in the PolyU RS department also provide me with various extracurricular service opportunities. Furthermore, there are many ways to join overseas or Mainland exchange programmes, which have allowed me to broaden my horizons. Through these activities, I have been able to apply my theoretical and technical knowledge in clinical practice, which has enhanced my practical skills and prepared me to become an occupational therapist to serve clients.

Yeung Ho Ying Daisy

Studying occupational therapy at PolyU has affirmed my passion for enhancing the quality of life of the public. Throughout the 4-year program, I gained knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, OT theory and processes, and psychology and developmental dysfunction. These courses were essential to develop my fundamental clinical reasoning for analysing cases during the clinical placements. My hands-on experiences and therapeutic skills were also sharpened by participating in the tutorials, which enhanced my confidence and satisfaction when delivering treatments to patients.

The programme offers many opportunities, ranging from projects on the design of innovative assistive devices and NGO visits to "We Care We Share" service-learning projects, which allow us to apply and consolidate the knowledge that we have learned in classes. As an OT-to-be, I cherish my time in this programme, as I am surrounded by knowledgeable, approachable, and supportive teachers; interact with patients who give me advice; and my friendly classmates, who work with me on the projects and in studying for exams.
