On November 2, 2024, we had an incredible time at the Bamboo Workshop - Unity in Diversity, where students from the Outstanding Student Academy, alongside non-local students and those from diverse backgrounds, came together for a day of creativity and learning. The joyful atmosphere allowed students to immerse themselves in bamboo scaffolding and lamp-making, creating beautiful lamps that showcased their hard work and creativity.
The workshop also featured a session on low-carbon cooking, where participants learned to prepare delicious meals using locally sourced ingredients and sustainable methods. Unity and collaboration were fostered as students practised what they had just learned while preparing low-carbon dishes together. Everyone left feeling inspired to adopt more eco-friendly cooking practices in their daily lives, recognizing the impact of their everyday choices.
The bamboo lamps were more than just souvenirs; they became a bridge connecting the younger and older generations. On November 26, 2024, students visited a Neighbourhood Elderly Centre to donate the bamboo lamps to seniors. The experience was profoundly meaningful, as students shared stories about their creations and witnessed the joy of the elderly receiving the lamps. This interaction taught them valuable communication skills, teaching them to simplify the complex process of lamp-making while discussing the craft. They also engaged with the elders in conversations about the benefits and various applications of bamboo. Students were inspired by the elders’ ideas, and their enthusiasm was sparked to explore more ways to use bamboo.
Overall, both the workshop and the follow-up event celebrated diversity, unity, and sustainability in a fun and engaging way, leaving lasting impressions on all participants and strengthening community bonds.
