Programme Aims
The BEng (Hons) Scheme in Electrical Engineering consists of the following degrees. It aims to give students the flexibility to decide on their final degree during their study.
-
The BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering provides in-depth coverage of electrical engineering based on an outcome-based education philosophy. The programme produces engineers who are able to practise their professions in a wide range of areas of electrical engineering, such as electrical power systems, energy conversion and utilisation, transportation systems, environmental protection, control, and computer and fibre-optic applications.
A modern electrical engineer should possess a broad-based education and the specialist knowledge needed to undertake high-level work in design, planning, supervision, and manufacturing. The programme thus emphasises mastery of both fundamental principles and the application of the latest engineering technology. Of equal importance is training in leadership, entrepreneurship and communication skills.
We encourage lifelong learning so that graduates can keep abreast of new developments in engineering and technology. -
The BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering aims to make full use of the hugely versatile applications of the in-demand disciplines of electrical engineering to broaden the career opportunities available to our graduates. Students are expected to acquire a solid understanding of the fundamentals of electrical engineering and to apply the knowledge gained and techniques learned to relevant areas in the field of transportation systems.
The programme philosophy focuses on the incorporation of up-to-date engineering knowledge into transportation systems to enhance the efficiency, reliability, safety and maintainability of infrastructure and services. At the core of the programme are current practices in transportation, the latest technologies in transportation systems, and their integration to provide engineering solutions to practical problems.
Programme Characteristics
-
The BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering is one of the premier electrical engineering degree programmes in Hong Kong, which provides unique and up-to-date education in electrical power and energy. The curriculum is designed to give a balanced treatment of university core requirements, electrical engineering fundamentals, advanced and specialist topics, and non-technical subjects such as management.
- The BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering is unique in Hong Kong, providing students with interdisciplinary knowledge and perspectives in modern transportation systems and a direct career path into the high-growth transportation industry and related sectors.
Engineering practice is an integrated component of the curriculum. Student learning is supplemented by a variety of laboratory, training and project activities. Students also develop good presentation and problem-solving skills through mini-projects and final-year projects. Students are required to take the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component, which may be in the form of summer training or an industrial attachment.
Students can also participate in exchange programmes and spend a semester at an overseas university. Every year, a number of students participate in exchange programmes with institutions such as Cardiff University, the National University of Singapore, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and North Carolina State University. The exchange programme offers excellent opportunities for students to study abroad, broaden their horizons and develop an appreciation of the cultures of other countries.
The Engineering and Entrepreneurship Club (E&E Club) provides a platform to enhance students’ interests in engineering and understanding of entrepreneurship. E&E Club organises workshops to nurture students’ technical skills and invites experts to share their knowledge of the requirements of entrepreneurship with students. It further supports students participating in both local and overseas underwater robot competitions.
Seminars, industry visits and overseas study tours are also organised to broaden students’ horizons.
*All admitted students embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of Year One, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty of Engineering. Those who wish to switch can choose their preferred departmental scheme/programme through a ranking assessment.
Professional Recognition
The BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering and BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering programmes have been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).
Career Prospects
- BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering graduates have numerous employment opportunities in engineering planning and design, manufacturing, installation, maintenance and servicing, engineering sales, and research. Graduates are able to develop rewarding careers in major utility and transportation companies, such as CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, the Hongkong Electric Company Limited and MTR Corporation Limited. They are also employed by engineering consultant firms, contractor companies, international engineering enterprises, electrical product manufacturers and the Government of the HKSAR.
-
BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering graduates can expect to receive attractive offers from various government departments; public and private transportation service providers; civil, electrical, and transportation engineering consultancies; and construction companies. They are well equipped to work in Hong Kong, in Mainland China, and overseas.
- In Year One, students embark on a Common Year One curriculum within the Faculty of Engineering.
- In Year Two, students complete a common curriculum within the Scheme. It focuses on the fundamentals of engineering science, engineering mathematics, engineering economics, computing and introductory studies of both electrical engineering and transportation systems engineering.
BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering
- In Year Three, students follow a semi-structured study pattern by taking compulsory core subjects in electrical engineering and elective subjects. The focus is on consolidating the fundamentals and developing teamwork and experimental skills. Discipline-specific language subjects are also studied.
- In Year Four, students take advanced core subjects and elective subjects and carry out final-year projects. Final year projects provide a comprehensive experience of learning engineering technology, problem-solving techniques, communication skills (both written and verbal) and creative thinking. Depending on their career aspirations and specialisations, students can choose from a list of electives to complement their knowledge in various areas of electrical engineering.
BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering
- In Year Three, essential knowledge of transportation systems, such as system analysis, planning and technical subjects from various engineering disciplines, is provided. Discipline-specific language subjects are also studied.
- In Year Four, students take four core subjects in transportation systems and one elective subject covering advanced or specialised topics related to transportation. Students may choose individual projects that are relevant to transportation systems engineering.
Information on the subjects offered can be found at https://www.polyu.edu.hk/eee/.
The option of taking a Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering students.
Features
Artificial intelligence and data analytics (AIDA) are the most prominent technologies in various disciplines, and their use has become standard in enriching business, advancing technology and achieving breakthroughs in virtually all fields. The Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) enables students to integrate AIDA skills into the study of the BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering and provides an opportunity for detailed study in a range of related specialist areas.
Remarks
Studying for a Secondary Major is a free choice by students and not mandatory. Only students with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or above may be considered for Secondary Major enrolment. This Secondary Major may stipulate additional selection criteria for admission and is subject to quota availability. Students must apply to and obtain approval from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, not later than the commencement of their second year of study, to be admitted to the Secondary Major.
