Programme Aims

The BEng (Hons) Scheme in Electrical Engineering consists of the following degrees. It aims to give students the flexibility to decide on the final degree in their study.

  • BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering provides in-depth coverage of electrical engineering based on an outcome-based education philosophy. The programme produces engineers who are able to practise their professions in a wide range of areas of electrical engineering, such as electrical power systems, energy conversion and utilisation, transportation systems, environmental protection, control, and computer and fibre-optic applications.

A modern electrical engineer should possess a broad-based education and the specialist knowledge needed to undertake high-level work in design, planning, supervision and manufacturing. The programme thus emphasises the mastery of both fundamental principles and the application of the latest engineering technology. Of equal importance is training in leadership, entrepreneurship and communication skills.

We encourage lifelong learning so that graduates can keep abreast of new developments in engineering and technology.

  • BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering aims to make full use of the hugely versatile applications of the in-demand disciplines of electrical engineering to broaden the career opportunities available to our graduates. Students are expected to acquire a solid understanding of the fundamentals of electrical engineering and to apply the knowledge gained and techniques learned to relevant areas in the field of transportation systems.

The programme philosophy focuses on the incorporation of up-to-date engineering knowledge into transportation systems to enhance the efficiency, reliability, safety and maintainability of infrastructure and services. Current practices in transportation, the latest technologies in transportation systems and their integration to provide engineering solutions to practical problems form the core of the programme.

Programme Characteristics

BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering is one of the premier electrical engineering degree programmes in Hong Kong that provides unique and up-to-date education in electrical power and energy. The curriculum is designed to give a balanced treatment of university core requirements, electrical engineering fundamentals, advanced and specialist topics, and non-technical subjects such as management.

BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering is unique in Hong Kong, providing students with interdisciplinary knowledge and perspectives in modern transportation systems and a direct career path into the high-growth transportation industry and related sectors.

Engineering practice is an integrated component of the curriculum. Student learning is supplemented by a variety of laboratory, training and project activities. Student Message

Studying Electrical Engineering at PolyU equipped me with multidimensional electricity-related knowledge, which gave me the ability to think critically and learn detail-oriented organisational skills to tackle problems innovatively. Practical training in the Industrial Centre contributes greatly to students’ professional readiness and future career development, and it allowed me to hone my interpersonal skills and inspired me with the idea of lifelong learning.

Apart from the academic learning experience, it was a privilege to be a Student Ambassador representing PolyU to promote my school and Electrical Engineering along with schoolmates from different faculties at school events and activities, which enhanced my confidence and other soft skills.

Going for an exchange may not be on your bucket list, but in my four-year university life, meeting friends from near and far was one of the best things I did at PolyU. Building friendships with others from different countries is one of my ultimate goals. I can be a hostess who welcomes and gets along with them, and we can grow, explore life, and experience ups and downs together.

WONG Wing Yi

I chose the BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering (TSE) programme because I am interested in traffic and transport, and this is the only programme in Hong Kong specifically focused on transportation systems.

During my school life, I learned about various aspects of transportation systems, including signal design, public transit performance analysis and intelligent transport systems. Because transportation systems require electricity, I also learned about Electrical Engineering topics, such as circuit analysis, power conversion and electric power infrastructures. The programme is more than calculation and written learning; practical training is provided by the Industrial Centre (IC) for hands-on experience using tools and software training in computer labs, from woodworking and concrete mixing to AutoCAD and 3D model drawings. The learning experiences in IC subjects differ from regular classes and are fun and valuable.

Apart from academics, I met many friends with similar interests while studying at TSE. We learned from each other and discussed recent developments in transportation. They made my school life very meaningful and joyful. Overall, studying at TSE has been rewarding and has helped me to be well-prepared to join the transportation field.

LAM Tsz Kwan

I am an Electrical Engineering (EE) degree student about to graduate. Four years ago, I was looking for the right programme. At that time, I was attracted by the excellent and all-round career prospects of EE, with diversified theories and practical skills leading to abundant job opportunities, a large variety of career choices, and a satisfactory salary for fresh graduates.

I am thankful that I chose to study in EE. It equipped me with useful practical skills, such as basic programming and hardware development, and enabled me to conduct small projects to solve daily issues, which satisfied me very much. Now, I am working on a Chinese IME programme using what I have learned here to make our future much more convenient.

I had many memorable moments at PolyU. My favourite was the orientation camp, which the student society organised during the hot summer. Those heart-warming and enjoyable activities were the best welcome for me as a freshman. It enabled me to bond me with PolyU and was the beginning of my delightful school life.

LEE Cheuk Hung

I have been interested in traffic flow since I was a child. Therefore, I chose Transportation Systems Engineering (TSE). The programme structure fit my interests and was suitable for me. It mainly focuses on transport flow and operation, which differs from civil engineering with structural and hydraulic engineering. I was excited about the various subjects that cover traffic theories on how the traffic flow acts in a mature state and how its efficiency can be improved.

Studying at TSE has evoked my intense enthusiasm for transportation because we meet problems with transport in our daily life. The daily observations really helped me understand the theories.

I was also required to study Electrical Engineering (EE) subjects. This knowledge can provide an alternative career path for graduates. It greatly enhanced my confidence in my study. It was great to meet friends with similar interests. I was able to befriend students who chose EE as their major, and we shared what we learned in TSE.

LEE Tsz Hin

I was interested in both electrical engineering and transportation systems engineering. The versatility of the programme provided various options for my career development. BEng (Hons) Transportation Systems Engineering (TSE) has an excellent all-rounded programme structure. It covers technical and theoretical knowledge required in the electrical and transportation engineering discipline. In my first two years of study, I learned basic knowledge of Electrical Engineering, such as circuit analysis, electronics, power electronics, and power transmission. In Years 3 and 4, I learned the theories and concepts of traffic engineering and transport planning to boost my engineering skills. The syllabus also covers emerging technologies in traffic management worldwide for inspiration. It greatly broadened my horizons.

The programme also includes compulsory practical training offered by the Industrial Centre in PolyU. The courses provide a hands-on introduction with the use of professional tools to handle engineering tasks in a safe environment. It helped me to have a comprehensive understanding of the engineering industries and equipped me to become a professional engineer.

LAM Yung Chit Clarance

When I selected my major study of JUPAS, the development of driverless cars was a hot topic worldwide. People discussed what would happen in the future and whether it would even be possible to have driverless cars. I don’t think I will be an inventor, but I want to be someone who can estimate the possibility of manufacturing. That’s why Transportation Systems Engineering (TSE) became my Major choice.

The professors introduced various theories, such as Wardrop’s first and second principles and transportation demand management, in their lectures. These topics will assist you in tackling practical engineering problems.

Regarding practical training, laboratory sections are offered by the department and training courses are offered by Industrial Centre (IC). I had the opportunity to explore something new. In the summer semester of Year 2, I took a series of IC training courses that included different modules, like welding, anchoring, electrical installation, etc. My experiences throughout the course were diverse.
