Therefore, Hong Kong is in great need of a smart, seamlessly integrated and multi-modal mobility system to connect it with the nation and the world. Accordingly, this secondary major aims to educate a new generation of engineers with a mastery of knowledge and skills in civil engineering, transportation engineering, data analytics and machine learning who can become leaders in smart mobility development.

Attractive features

  • A 4-year (1 common year + 3 years of a selected major) full-time comprehensive programme.
  • Opportunities to join exchange programmes for one or two semesters at universities with international reputations.
  • Practical training modules in the University's technologically advanced Industrial Centre.
  • Summer placements in Hong Kong, Mainland China or overseas.
  • A global learning experience for each student.
  • Scholarships are available for students demonstrating excellent academic performance.

Remarks

  • A common curriculum is provided for all first-year students.
  • At the end of the second semester of Year One, students who are interested in taking the BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering (Smart Mobility) with a Secondary Major in AIDA are subject to further assessment based on their grade point average (GPA) in Year One.
  • Only students with a cumulative GPA of 2.70 or above are considered for enrolment in the Secondary Major.
  • The BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering (Smart Mobility) is only offered in conjunction with the Secondary Major in AI and Data Analytics.
  • Students who wish to withdraw from the Secondary Major must obtain approval from the Department before the end of the add/drop period of the final semester of study.
  • The degree title of students who have withdrawn from the Secondary Major changes to BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering. These students’ graduation may be delayed.

Professional Recognition

Full accreditation for the programme will be sought from The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Graduates of the programme will then qualify for the HKIE's Scheme A training in the following disciplines:

  • Civil Discipline
  • Geotechnical Discipline
  • Structural Discipline
  • Logistics & Transportation Discipline

Career Prospects

The majority of our graduates with a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering embark on rewarding careers in government departments and authorities and as engineering consultants and construction contractors soon after graduation. After a few years of relevant working experience, many graduates further advance their careers by sitting an examination to become professional engineers. Other graduates pursue higher degrees at prestigious overseas institutions. In addition, graduates with this Secondary Major have a competitive edge when seeking positions with transport consultancies, public transport operators, mobility-as-a-service companies, and other positions in the field of smart mobility development and applications.

Curriculum

  • Comprehensive civil engineering subjects are taught from the second to the fourth year, covering practical knowledge of geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering and construction management.
  • The Year One common curriculum covers fundamental knowledge and the latest issues in civil engineering, as well as related
fields in construction and environmental studies.
  • The curricula in Years Two and Three cover comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in civil engineering and transportation engineering. An elementary grounding in statistics, data analysis, programming and machine learning is also provided.
  • The Year Four curriculum offers a wide range of advanced elective subjects in civil engineering, data analytics and artificial intelligence that enables students to gain in-depth exposure to fields of particular interest to them. In addition, students complete a Design Project, which requires them to integrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired in their previous 3 years of study, and an Integrated Capstone Project, which provides them with research experience in specific areas of smart mobility that advances their intellectual development.
  • 12 credits of the Major also count towards the Secondary Major.

Student Message

Studying at PolyU has been an enriching experience, offering me the opportunity to learn from a diverse array of world-class experts hailing from different corners of the globe. The unwavering support and guidance provided by our dedicated teachers have been instrumental in shaping our academic journey, instilling in us a sense of passion and perseverance in observing problems and solving them as engineering students.

Furthermore, the academic curriculum at PolyU is thoughtfully designed to not only impart theoretical knowledge but also provide ample opportunities for practical learning. Armed with knowledge gained from our lessons, we are able to establish a more robust foundation for our chosen career paths. Through a series of engaging practical experiments and industrial training programmes, we as students are empowered to apply our classroom learning in real-world scenarios, honing our skills and preparing us for the challenges of the professional engineering landscape. This enhances our performance in internship training.

In addition to academic pursuits, my involvement in the HKIE Student Chapter Committee in the 2023/24 session has been invaluable in broadening my perspective on the field of professional engineering. Being exposed to a diverse range of experiences has not only enriched my understanding but also inspired me to aspire to greater heights in my chosen career path.

CHEUNG Kai Ni

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has provided abundant opportunities to facilitate our all rounded development. I had the privilege of founding the PolyU Smart Mobility Student Chapter and contributing to our team’s achievement as the first runner-up in the ESRI Young Scholar Award (Group Application). These experiences not only honed my leadership abilities but also kept me connected with the evolving developments in our field.

My involvement with a research team focused on low carbon concrete and 3D printing concrete was particularly rewarding. It has been a valuable opportunity to engage In research that emphasizes sustainability—an essential consideration in today’s engineering practices.

The support I received from the department has been instrumental in my growth outside PolyU as well. Serving as the chairperson of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Student Chapter and leading initiatives with Engineers Without Borders Hong Kong have enriched my experience and allowed me to contribute to the community.

Most recently, I completed a year-long exchange program and my final year project at Imperial College London under the guidance of Prof. Jamie Standing. The experience, including visits to the Central Line of the London Underground and collaboration with Arup London, helped me gain insights into global practices in construction and deepen my understanding of geotechnical engineering.

These experiences have significantly shaped my perspective and skills, and I encourage you to embrace the diverse opportunities that await you in the CEE programme.

CHAN Tsz Tung

During my four-year degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering at PolyU, I was captivated by the dynamic interplay of various disciplines that shape the built environment. From structural design and geotechnical analysis to hydraulic design and transportation planning, I gained a holistic understanding of how these different facets work together to deliver infrastructure projects.

The hands-on learning opportunities were a particular highlight. Whether it was conducting soil tests in the lab, designing a building project in a group, or participating in a construction project during my internship, I was able to translate classroom theory into practice seamlessly.

Upon my graduation in 2023, my career has taken an exciting turn. As a civil engineering graduate now working for the Hong Kong Government, I am participating in strengthening the city's infrastructure. From the Highways Department to the Drainage Services Department, I've had the opportunity to rotate among various departments, applying my academic knowledge and hands-on experiences in my daily work.  Applying the skills and expertise I developed during my studies towards meaningful projects that benefit the community is a deeply rewarding experience.
