Programme Aims, Learning Outcomes and Characteristics
This programme aims to nurture well-rounded civil engineering graduates who are conversant in environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering, in addition to construction management. Graduates are able to plan, design, construct and manage interdisciplinary civil engineering projects incorporating complex commercial, environmental, social and legal considerations.
All admitted students embark on a Common Year One curriculum. After the first year of study, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to switch can choose their preferred departmental scheme/programme through a ranking assessment.
Attractive features
- A 4-year (1 common year + 3 years of a selected major) full-time comprehensive programme.
- Opportunities to join exchange programmes for one or two semesters at universities with international reputations.
- Practical training modules in the University's technologically advanced Industrial Centre.
- Summer placements in Hong Kong, Mainland China or overseas.
- A global learning experience for each student.
- Scholarships are available for students demonstrating excellent academic performance.
Professional Recognition
Full accreditation has been granted to this programme by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Graduates of this programme qualify for Corporate Membership of the HKIE after appropriate training and are eligible to join the HKIE's Scheme A training in the following disciplines:
- Civil Discipline
- Environmental Discipline
- Geotechnical Discipline
- Structural Discipline
- Logistics & Transportation Discipline (upon completion of specific elective subjects)
Career Prospects
The majority of our graduates embark upon rewarding careers in government departments and authorities and as engineering consultants and construction contractors soon after graduation. After a few years of work experience, many graduates further advance their careers by sitting an examination to become professional engineers. Other graduates pursue higher degrees at prestigious overseas institutions.
- The Year One common curriculum covers fundamental knowledge and the latest issues in civil engineering, as well as related fields in construction and environmental studies.
- The curricula in Years Two and Three provide comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in civil engineering, environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering and construction management.
- The Year Four curriculum offers a wide range of advanced elective subjects that enable students to gain in-depth exposure to fields of particular interest to them. Students complete a Design Project, which requires them to integrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired in their previous 3 years of study, and an Individual Capstone Project, which provides them with research experience that advances their intellectual development.
