Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This challenging programme aims to develop all-round and flexible graduates with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the interdisciplinary professions of land management, real estate development and construction project management. The programme underpins surveying studies with the disciplines of economics and finance, law, management and technology and cultivates a global mindset through international study in the real estate and construction markets in China and overseas.

Graduates are well prepared to enter the professions of building surveying, general practice surveying (real estate), planning and development, property and facility management and quantity surveying (construction economics), with full potential to take leading and strategic roles in the profession and business of land, property and construction in future.

Programme Characteristics

This is a professional degree programme with a global and practical perspective. Students learn about economics, law, finance and investment, management and technology in the construction and real estate contexts. Problem identification, problem solving and decision making are the main areas of focus of the programme.

There is close contact with the industry through guest lectures, companies and site visits. Students undertake group and individual practical projects throughout their studies.

Practical training/internships (work-integrated education) are a compulsory element of the curriculum. Students usually undertake internships during the summer period.

The Department maintains a mentorship scheme in which students are matched with senior figures in the construction and real estate industry to gain insights into professional practice.

The Department also operates a student exchange programme to give students the opportunity to study abroad for one academic semester at universities in the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan, Mainland China, etc.

All admitted students embark on a Common Year One curriculum. After the first year of study, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to switch can choose their preferred departmental scheme/programme through a ranking assessment.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

The programme is professionally accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in the UK (RICS)* and the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS).

Our graduates readily find employment as professional trainees in various international surveying consultancies, property development companies, construction companies, government departments (such as the Rating and Valuation Department, the Lands Department, the Housing Department, the Architectural Services Department and the Buildings Department) and other large quasi-public organisations (such as MTR, the Urban Renewal Authority and the Hong Kong Housing Society).

In recent years, some graduates have also been recruited into business and financial institutions in the fields of asset and facility management. The majority of the graduating class have been offered employment before or shortly after their final examination.

Student Message

Studying in the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) has been a spectacular experience for me. The Surveying programme offers a well-rounded curriculum that strikes a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical application. The subjects offered are thoroughly designed, with a strong emphasis on the latest developments in digitalisation and construction technology. I have also gained research experience by participating in various projects led by professors. My dissertation won the Chartered Institute of Building (Hong Kong) Outstanding Student Award for 2018–2019. After receiving solid training in BRE and gaining extensive experience, I am now a qualified member of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (BSD).

During my studies, I had the great opportunity to participate in a 6-month exchange programme at the National University of Singapore. This experience broadened my academic and cultural horizons. The global perspective I gained was beneficial during my time as a Technical Trainee at Swire Properties Limited.

BRE’s practical training and industry connections were instrumental in preparing me for the professional world. The internship programme and mentorship scheme enabled me to apply my knowledge to practical scenarios, closing the gap between theory and industry practice.

I am grateful for the knowledge, skills and experiences gained through BRE’s Surveying programme.
