Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This challenging programme aims to develop all-round and flexible graduates with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the interdisciplinary professions of land management, real estate development and construction project management.  The Programme underpins surveying studies with the disciplines of economics and finance, law, management and technology and cultivates a global mindset with international studies in the real estate and construction markets in China and overseas.

Students are well prepared to enter the professions of building surveying, general practice surveying (real estate), planning and development, property and facility management and quantity surveying (construction economics) with full potentials to take leading and strategic roles in the profession and business of land, property and construction in future.

Programme Characteristics

This is a professional degree programme with a global and practical perspective. Students will learn about economics, law, finance and investment, management and technology in the construction and real estate context. Problem identification, problem solving and decision making form the focus of the programme.

There is close contact with the industry through guest lectures, companies and site visits. Students will undertake group and individual practical projects throughout their studies.

Practical training / Internship (Work-Integrated Education) is a compulsory element of the curriculum. Students usually undertake internship during the summer period.

The Department maintains a mentorship scheme in which students are matched with senior figures in the construction and real estate industry to gain insights into professional practice.

The Department also operates a student exchange programme to provide students with opportunities to study abroad for one academic semester at Universities in UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan and the Mainland, etc.

All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of year one, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment.

Student Message

My studies at the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) have been a spectacular experience. The Surveying Programme offers a well-rounded curriculum that strikes a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical application. The subjects offered are comprehensively designed, with a strong emphasis on the latest developments in digitalisation and construction technology. In addition, I gained research experience by participating in various projects led by professors. My dissertation won the Chartered Institute of Building (Hong Kong) Outstanding Student Award for 2018-2019. After receiving solid training in BRE and gaining extensive experience, I am now a qualified member of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (BSD).

During my studies, I had a great opportunity of participate in a half-year exchange programme at the National University of Singapore. This experience broadened my academic and cultural horizons. The global perspective was beneficial during my time as a Technical Trainee at Swire Properties Limited.

BRE’s practical training and industry connections were instrumental in preparing me for the professional world. The internship programme and mentorship scheme enabled me to apply my knowledge to practical scenarios, closing the gap between theory and industry.

I am grateful for the knowledge, skills, and experiences that I gained through BRE’s Surveying Programme.
