Aims & Learning Outcomes
This programme provides an excellent opportunity for students who would like to pursue an education in the building engineering and construction management profession. The advancing building construction industry in Hong Kong and neighbouring regions requires graduates who possess highly specialized skills in technology, management and communication. Students also face intellectual challenges that promote self-development and enhance problem-solving skills. Our well-trained graduates are in great demand as professional building engineers and construction managers because they can easily adapt to the changing needs of the construction industry and have developed the expertise that is necessary to plan, coordinate, supervise and control the complex process of building projects.
Characteristics
Students are required to take 121 credits and 2 training credits in this four-year programme. The subjects include Building Engineering and Technology, Management, Construction Economics, Project Works, Capstone Project and Languages.
Site visits and guest lectures are arranged throughout the course of study.
Practical training / Internship (Work-Integrated Education) is a compulsory element of the curriculum. Students usually undertake internship during the summer period.
The Department maintains a mentorship scheme in which students are matched with senior figures in the construction and real estate industry to gain insights into professional practice.
The Department also operates a student exchange programme to provide students with opportunities to study abroad for one academic semester at Universities in UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan and the Mainland, etc.
All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of year one, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment.
Professional Recognition
Professional accreditation has been granted from the following institutions:
*The Hong Kong Institute of Engineers (HKIE);
*The Chartered Institute of Building in the UK (CIOB) ; and
*The Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM).
Career Prospects
Following appropriate training in the industry, graduates will become building engineers and/or construction managers. The continuing growth of Hong Kong's building and infrastructure development offers opportunities for challenging and rewarding careers. Our graduates usually take up positions with construction companies or real estate development companies.
The programme covers the following subject components:
*Core / Discipline Specific Requirements (DSR) Subjects
Construction Technology, Structural Mechanics, Building Services, Temporary Works Design, Project Management & Procurement, Maintenance Technology & Management, Measurement, Documentation & Estimating, Building Information Modelling (BIM) applications and development, etc.
*General University Requirement Subjects
Students are required to take 30 credits of General University Requirement (GUR) subjects.
*Capstone Project
Students are required to undertake a 6-credit Capstone Project.
*Work-Integrated Education
The Work-Integrated Education (WIE) element in the Department will last for a minimum duration of four weeks in full time placement (equivalent to 22 full days) or 176 hours in part time placement. The Department has developed opportunities for students to work in firms or organizations during the summer in Hong Kong or overseas, which will count towards the WIE requirement.
Students can choose Elective Subjects from a pool of designated subjects to suit their own career development and personal interests.

The option of Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to the students of BSc (Hons) Building Engineering and Management.
Features
*Innovative new structure programme pathway
Students attain Award Major in Building Engineering and Management (BEM) and Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) in the 4 years of undergraduate studies.
*Digital technology and innovation in construction
The programme is designed to train up students to become digitalisation specialists who will lead innovation in the field of construction industry by adopting advanced digital technologies and data-driven approaches. Students are equipped with core principles and practical knowledge in traditional construction technology and management alongside in-depth and integrated understanding of various artificial intelligence and data analytics approaches through interdisciplinary and hands-on training.
*Wide range of core and elective subjects
Students are allowed to choose core and elective subjects as the Secondary Major (AIDA) requirements that range from basic programming fundamentals to advanced data science and artificial intelligence techniques offered by different departments at PolyU (e.g. Building and Real Estate, Applied Mathematics, Computing, Electronic and Information Engineering, Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, etc.), considering their interests in specific fields of Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics. Also, all BRE Level 3 and Level 4 subjects of a particular Major or disciplines are offered as electives to students of another Major within the Department.
*Internship and Field Study
Through internship and field study, students will be able to acquire practical skills and knowledge, learn industry best practices and latest technologies application, and explore the changing digital technological needs of various stakeholders in the construction industry.
Remarks
1. The total credits required for graduation of BSc(Hons) in Building Engineering and Management (BEM) with the Secondary Major (AIDA) are 144 [including 142 academic credits and 2 training credits (Work-Integrated Education, WIE)]. Details are as follows:
- General University Requirements (GUR): 30 academic credits
- BEM Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR): 91 academic credits + 2 training credits
- Secondary Major (AIDA) Requirements: 36 academic credits (Core: 30 credits and Elective: 6 credits)
- Double counted credits for both BEM discipline-specific requirements and Secondary Major (AIDA) requirements: 15 credits (4 subjects including Integrated Capstone Project of 6 credits)
- Total credits required: 30 credits (GUR) + 93 credits (BEM) + 36 credits (AIDA) – 15 credits (double counting for BEM and AIDA) = 144 credits
2. Students opting for the secondary major (AIDA) will have only one elective subject whereas the students of the existing major (BEM) will have two elective subjects to choose within their respective programme curriculums.
3. The major programme of BSc (Hons) in Building Engineering and Management is accredited by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). BSc (Hons) in Building Engineering and Management with secondary major will seek the accreditation from these professional bodies as well.
