Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims, Learning Outcomes and Characteristics

This is a unique programme that integrates elements of environmental engineering, environmental science, sustainable development, and carbon neutrality technologies and management. Graduates are able to devise practical solutions to environmental problems in water and waste management, circular economies, energy sustainability, and urban development, and contribute to the formulation of policies that will lead to sustainable development.

All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of year one, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment.

Attractive Features

  • A 4-year (1 common year + 3 years of your selected major) full-time comprehensive programme.
  • Opportunities to join exchange programmes for 1–2 semesters at top universities worldwide.
  • Practical training modules in the technologically advanced Industrial Centre of the University.
  • Summer placement in Hong Kong, Mainland China or overseas.
  • A global learning experience for each student.
  • Scholarships are available for students demonstrating excellent academic performance.
Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

Full accreditation has been granted to this programme by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). As such, graduates of this programme are qualified for Corporate Membership of HKIE after appropriate training and are eligible to join Scheme A training of HKIE in the following disciplines:

  • Environmental Discipline
  • Logistics & Transportation Discipline (upon completion of specific elective subjects)

Upon the completion of three specific safety subjects, students will fulfil the academic requirements of a Safety Supervisor.

Career Prospects

The majority of our graduates embark upon rewarding careers in government departments and authorities, engineering consultants and construction contractors soon after graduation. After a few years of work experience, many graduates further advance their careers by sitting an examination to become professional engineers. Other graduates pursue higher degrees at prestigious overseas institutions.

Curriculum
  • The Year 1 common curriculum covers fundamental knowledge and the latest issues in environmental engineering, as well as related fields in civil engineering and construction.
  • The Years 2 and 3 curricula cover comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in the fields of environmental science, environmental engineering, management and sustainable development.
  • The Year 4 curriculum provides in-depth exposure to specific fields of interest through a wide range of advanced elective subjects. Students conduct a Design Project, which requires them to integrate knowledge and skills they have acquired in their first 3 years of study, and an Individual Capstone Project, which gives them research experience and thereby supports their further intellectual development.

Student Message

How time flies! I have begun my fourth year of academic study in environmental engineering, and this has been a profound journey that has catalysed my passion to construct sustainable communities as a future engineer.

The coursework in this major provides environmental engineering knowledge in areas related to noise, air, water, and waste in the disciplines of sustainable and environmental protection. Apart from theoretical knowledge, the university and department provide students with numerous opportunities to engage with the outside world through internships, design projects, and outbound activities in collaboration with external organisations. These hands-on experiences have contributed to my personal growth and integration into society. During my third academic year, I took the opportunity to mentor secondary students in sustainable development via 3D modelling. I also participated in various internships in the environmental protection sector, which broadened my network and allowed me to put the academic knowledge in place.

The academic path is often filled with challenges, but the connections with and support from students, experts, and the university have motivated me to overcome these challenges; as a result, I have been trained as a competent engineer with a critical thinking and problem-solving mindset. Please do not be hesitant to learn in and yield to this wonderful life-long journey.

Cheung Chung Man

In the last three years, as an environmental engineering student, I have found myself immersed in a diverse array of subjects ranging from understanding ecosystems to tackling water and air pollution, as well as the intricate reactions among substances in our environment. Apart from environmental studies, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics are essential for building a solid foundation upon which to solve engineering problems. FCE has also equipped us with the necessary tools and mastery, including construction drawing techniques, BIM, and programming skills, to help us prepare for real-world challenges in the field of environmental engineering.

In addition to this variety of knowledge, I was given a chance to work as a lab assistant in CEE last year. This role has provided me an opportunity to familiarise myself with various research machines, thereby expanding my practical knowledge. Furthermore, I have helped to organise academic conferences, where I have had the privilege to discover the latest research in the environmental and sustainable sectors.

This year, with the help of PolyU, I spent six weeks in Spain, exploring sustainable practices. Working on tasks with individuals from various cultural backgrounds was challenging yet rewarding. It fostered my communication and problem-solving abilities. This journey not only broadened my horizons but also equipped me with a deeper appreciation of the interconnectedness of environmental issues on a global scale.

As I look back on this journey, I am thankful that FCE offers a wide range of opportunities for students to explore and improve. I am certain that at PolyU, you will learn about environmental engineering and sustainable development beyond mere textbook knowledge.

CHOY Cheuk Yin

My journey at PolyU over the past four years has been a transformative one, filled with personal growth, leadership opportunities, and a deepening passion for the environmental field.

When I first arrived on campus, I admittedly struggled with self-doubt and was unsure of my place, especially during COVID. However, during the course of my studies, I have been able to transform that uncertainty into unwavering faith in my future. Embracing the various leadership roles I have taken on, both within my department and in external organisations, has been instrumental in this journey. I have learned to humble myself, acknowledge my mistakes, and emerge stronger and more confident in my expertise.

Engaging with diverse cultures and navigating the challenges of a global perspective have further enriched my experience. Thanks to funding from PolyU, I have had multiple international experiences through my studies in the UK and Poland. While cultivating my worldview, I have also unleashed my potential, pursuing my passion for the environment with a renewed sense of purpose. Forming connections with like-minded individuals, participating in department events, and building close bonds with my mentors and peers have all been crucial in keeping me accountable and motivated.

Overcoming my fears and daring to try new things have been the hallmarks of these four years, which I now consider the best of my life. I am both humbled and grateful for the opportunities that PolyU has provided, which have shaped me into the graduate engineering student I am today.
