  • Students are subject to further assessment criteria i.e. students’ own choice, GPA and interview performance in selection of awards/majors at the end of their Year One study.

  • The option of a Secondary Major in AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to students of the BSc (Hons) in Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics. Admission to the Secondary Major is competitive and subject to a different credit requirement for graduation. Please see the Secondary Major Details section for more information.

Aims & Characteristics

Aims & Learning Outcomes

The aims of the LSGI Scheme are underpinned by the philosophy that our graduates should be capable of coping with the rapidly changing market conditions in Hong Kong, mainland China and the region, and with the demands of their future professions in land surveying, geo-information technology, utility management and surveying, as well as urban informatics and smart cities. The Department has close links with professional bodies and invites industry experts to give guest lectures to students whenever appropriate.

 

Programme Characteristics

Applicants to the LSGI Scheme may choose from the following two programmes: 
 

BSc (Hons) in Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics

This programme equips students with land surveying/geomatics, geo-information technology and utility surveying/management skills, enabling graduates to work competently and confidently as geographic information systems professionals in disciplines such as transport and logistics, and environmental, socio-economic, commercial and construction surveying; or as utility professionals in a discipline related to the survey, condition diagnosis, maintenance and management of underground facilities.   
 

BSc (Hons) in Urban Informatics and Smart Cities

This programme equips students to cope with various challenges in global cities under rapid urbanization process. The main purpose of the proposed programme is the education of principles and theories in urban science as well as practical skills in urban analytics so that they can leverage emerging technologies and values in urban big data to better understand and serve smart cities.

Upon completion of the programme, students are able to

  • apply appropriate mathematical and computing skills to solve problems and analyse data;

  • comprehend and apply geomatics and smart cities concepts and theories;

  • understand geomatics and smart cities technologies and apply them appropriately;

  • integrate various geomatics and smart cities technologies to solve problems in a professional, timely and cost effective manner;

  • carry out and manage geomatics and smart cities projects;

  • work with and supervise others in accordance with, and abiding by, society’s legal, ethical and professional standards; and

  • respond to advancements in geomatics and related technologies as part of their continuous lifelong learning.

All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of year one, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment.

Professional Recognition

For BSc (Hons) in Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, the programme is accredited by The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS), The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), The Land Surveyors Board Malaysia (LSB), The Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES) and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineering Surveyors (HKIES).

 

For BSc (Hons) in Urban Informatics and Smart Cities, the programme is accredited by The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS).

Career Prospects

For BSc (Hons) in Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, graduates can become professional land surveyors, geo-information technology specialists or utility specialists.

 

For BSc (Hons) in Urban Informatics and Smart Cities, graduates will have various employment opportunities in both public sectors and private companies from a broad range of areas about smart city management including but not limited to construction, telecommunication, information technology, urban planning, transportation and logistics, public health, environmental management, social welfare, finance and real estate.

Curriculum

The programme curriculum enables students to develop all-round skills and to be ready for professional careers through subjects related to the land/utility surveying and geo-informatics industry, urban informatics and smart cities, and subjects related to languages, ethics and global engagement. By the end of the first foundation year, students will opt for BSc (Hons) in Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics or BSc (Hons) in Urban Informatics and Smart Cities. Selection of students will be according to the student choice and academic performance. Compulsory subjects are offered every year and in progressive patterns, whereas a group of elective subjects are offered in both BSc (Hons) in Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics and BSc (Hons) in Urban Informatics and Smart Cities. This combination of compulsory and elective subjects equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to comprehend basic and advanced technologies. 
 

These include basic surveying, positioning and navigation skills and advanced 3D mapping, modelling, visualisation skills related to the analysis of terrain, infrastructure, buildings, underwater environments, the underground world and even other planets, with emphases changing over time. Our graduates are of the highest calibre and are well equipped to pursue professional careers or further education after their 4 years of study.

Features

The Secondary Major in AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) to BSc (Hons) in Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics provides a platform for students to understand and promote the theory and science of smart cities, gather city-scale data and transform these data into knowledge using the right tools. This programme focuses on emerging developments in big data and in interdisciplinary solutions to the world’s urban challenges.

 

Remarks

  • The minimum credit requirement of taking Secondary Major in AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) is 131 academic credits plus 1 training credit. Actual number of credits may vary depending on the subject choices. 
  • The Major has 12 credits of double-counting subjects towards the Secondary Major. 
  • Students who achieve Cumulative GPA of 2.70 or above by the end of Year One Semester Two would be considered for the Secondary Major.

Student Message

My university experience has been both demanding and extremely fulfilling. Finding the right balance between academic and social life was not an easy task; however, PolyU's amazing support system allowed me to thrive in both areas.


Besides its excellent education, LSGI provided me with many opportunities and resources to further my interests in Land Surveying and Geo-informatics and foster a proactive attitude towards learning. Notably, my internships with famous surveying firms were the most transformative. They gave me invaluable insights into the application of geomatics principles in the real world and really helped me solidify how these skills will shape my future career path. I gained direct professional experience with a variety of land surveying techniques and equipment, which was extremely valuable. In the process, I acquired skills in using Total Stations for high-precision distance and angle measurements, GPS receivers for geospatial data acquisition, and Digital Levels for accurate height determination. I learnt to fly UAVs (drones) equipped with photogrammetry software to capture aerial images to create 3D terrain models. Combining all these tools with advanced GIS software for spatial data analysis and management has given me a comprehensive skill set.


I also participated in international internship programmes and Geomatics conferences, which not only expanded my academic knowledge but also helped me establish a global network of professional contacts. Through these various experiences, I have become a more adaptable and innovative person, ready to take on the dynamic challenges of the Geomatics field.


Now, with a solid foundation and multidisciplinary skills, I feel confident and better placed to pursue a professional career in Land Surveying.

I am honoured to be part of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). My academic journey in the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI) has greatly enriched my professional knowledge and brought a lot of joy into my life.


At LSGI, the abundance of learning resources allowed us not only to go beyond theoretical studies but also to engage in practical operations. This deepened our understanding of professional knowledge and cultivated our teamwork skills. The extensive knowledge of our professors also often provided us with deep insights.


Beyond the compulsory courses, our Department encouraged us to choose areas of interest to explore in depth. Personally, being particularly interested in remote sensing, I decided to focus my final year project on the detection of maritime oil spills using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery.


Moreover, I had the opportunity to complete internships and part-time work experiences at the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) and AECOM. These experiences not only deepened my understanding of the field but also provided valuable insights for my future career development.


In summary, my educational experience at PolyU not only helped me to clarify my career plans but also allowed me to make friends and boost my confidence. I am truly grateful for the comprehensive educational experience offered by PolyU.
