Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes
We equip graduates with the technical and academic competence to excel in building sciences and engineering/building services engineering.
This programme meets the demand for locally trained building/building services engineers with expertise in consultancy, contracting, building management and research and development.
Our graduates also have a broad range of personal skills, such as communicating effectively, thinking critically, learning independently, and solving new problems innovatively.
Programme Characteristics
Students learn the art and science of providing safe, healthy, and energy-efficient built environments with minimal adverse ecological impacts. They also have opportunities to tackle intellectual challenges that prepare them to become managers in the industry.
Students have the opportunity to work in teams, lead small projects, work independently and interact with highly qualified and professional staff. They also have access to various design software and laboratory facilities for the latest building sciences and engineering applications, such as artificial intelligence and big data for smart buildings.
Local and overseas summer placement opportunities are offered.
Students who join the Student Exchange Programme can study for a semester at universities in the United States, Europe, Australia, Russia, Southeast Asia or Mainland China.
Students are regularly awarded scholarships by professional bodies and major organisations in Hong Kong.
Professional Recognition
The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) has granted full accreditation to the BEng(Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering.
Graduates of this programme may then qualify for Scheme A training with the HKIE in the following disciplines: (i) Building Services, (ii) Fire, (iii) Environmental* and (iv) Energy. Academic programmes in the Building Services discipline that the HKIE accredits are reciprocally recognised by the UK's Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).
* Upon completion of specific elective subjects.
Career Prospects
Graduates have good career prospects in the building construction and real estate sectors.
The rapid construction of new and state-of-the-art buildings in Hong Kong provides numerous attractive local employment opportunities. As the programme is widely recognised, these opportunities extend to Mainland China and overseas.
Graduates often begin their careers as trainee engineers in government departments, consulting firms, contracting companies, property management companies or utility companies.
First Class Honours graduates may consider research an attractive option, mainly because building development in Hong Kong embraces advanced technology worthy of in-depth investigation.
-
All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of year one, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment.
-
At the end of Semester 2 of Year One, students may opt for a Secondary Major programme in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE) or Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA). Admission to the Secondary Major is competitive. Each Secondary Major may stipulate additional selection criteria for admission.
-
In Year Three, students apply their foundational knowledge to the design and operation of major building services engineering systems.
-
In the final year, students opt for electives from a pool addressing the latest developments and technology in the fields of building sciences and engineering, and they also undertake a major project.
The option of a Secondary Major is available to students of the BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering:
-
Secondary Major in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE)
-
Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA)
Features
-
Secondary Major in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE)
The BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering plus the Secondary Major in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE) offers an interdisciplinary and integrated programme to nurture graduates with the mindset and skillset needed for building sciences and engineering/building services engineering and innovation and entrepreneurship. Through a flexible programme structure and cross-disciplinary design, students are equipped with the knowledge and techniques critical for building sciences and engineering/building services engineering, and with the capability to analyse, plan and implement financially viable and technically feasible innovation and entrepreneurship activities. Students are also provided with hands-on experience in innovative and entrepreneurial activities. Upon completing of the programme, students will be well-positioned to play a vital role in the building services engineering industry and the innovation and technology industry in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area and beyond.
-
Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA)
The BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering plus Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) is an interdisciplinary and integrated programme that equip students with a strong foundation in building sciences engineering/building services engineering, computer science, statistics and mathematics, fostering in them the technical and academic competence needed to excel in building sciences and engineering/building services engineering and to use of AIDA techniques to solve contemporary problems in the field. This programme incorporate a block of AIDA subjects (such as programming, mathematics, statistics, big data, AI and machine learning) focusing on building sciences engineering and building services engineering. Students will be equipped with technical skills related to AI and Data Analytics, and domain knowledge from a block of subjects chosen from the BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering and GUR subjects. An Integrated Capstone Project (ICP) is also included to develop student’s capabilities in analysing and solving complex and potential real-life problems and to train them in skills related to the systematic development and documentation of a significant piece of work.
