What's New
- Undergraduate
- Undergraduate
All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of year one, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment, which considers a combination of entrance qualification score, Year One GPA, and interview performance.
Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes
We equip graduates with the technical and academic competence to excel in the areas of building sciences and engineering and building services engineering.
This programme is designed to meet the demand for locally trained building and building services engineers with expertise in consultancy, contracting, building management, and research and development.
Our graduates have a broad range of personal skills, such as effective communication, critical thinking, independent learning, and innovative problem-solving skills.
Programme Characteristics
Students learn the art and science of providing safe, healthy, and energy-efficient built environments with minimal adverse ecological impacts. They also have the opportunity to tackle intellectual challenges that will prepare them to become managers in the industry.
Our students have opportunities to work in teams, lead small projects, work independently, and interact with highly qualified and professional staff. They also have access to various types of design software and laboratory facilities equipped for the latest building science and engineering applications, such as artificial intelligence and big data for smart buildings.
Local and overseas summer placement opportunities are available.
Students who join the Student Exchange Programme can study for a semester at universities in the United States, Europe, Australia, Russia, Southeast Asia, or Mainland China.
Our students are regularly awarded scholarships from professional bodies and major organisations in Hong Kong.
Professional Recognition
The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) has granted full accreditation to the BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering.
Graduates of this programme may qualify for Scheme A training with the HKIE in the following disciplines: (i) Building Services, (ii) Fire, (iii) Environmental*, and (iv) Energy. The HKIE-accredited academic programmes in the Building Services discipline are reciprocally recognised by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) in the UK.
* Upon completion of specific elective subjects.
Career Prospects
Graduates of this programme have good career prospects in the building construction and real estate sectors.
The rapid construction of new state-of-the-art buildings in Hong Kong has provided numerous attractive, local employment opportunities. The programme’s wide recognition has expanded these opportunities to Mainland China and overseas.
Graduates often begin their careers as trainee engineers in government departments, consulting firms, contracting companies, property management companies, and utility companies.
First-class Honours graduates may also consider research as an attractive option because the field of building development in Hong Kong has embraced advanced technology worthy of in-depth investigation.
-
At the end of Semester 2 of Year 1, students may opt to pursue a Secondary Major programme in IE or AIDA. Admission to a Secondary Major programme is competitive, and each programme may stipulate additional selection criteria for admission.
-
In Year Three, students apply their foundational knowledge to the design and operation of major building services engineering systems.
-
In the Final Year, students choose electives from a pool of courses that address the latest developments and technology in the fields of building sciences and engineering, and they also undertake a major project.
Students in the BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering programme have the option to pursue one of the following Secondary Major programmes:
- Secondary Major in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE) or
- Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA)
Features
- Secondary Major in IE
The BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering plus a Secondary Major in IE is an interdisciplinary and integrated programme that nurtures students with the mindset and skillset needed to work in the fields of building sciences and engineering or building services engineering and innovation and entrepreneurship. Through a flexible programme structure and cross-disciplinary design, students are equipped with crucial knowledge and techniques in the areas of building sciences and engineering/building services engineering and the capability to analyse, plan, and implement financially viable and technically feasible innovation and entrepreneurial activities. Students are also provided with hands-on experience in innovation and entrepreneurial activities. Upon completing the programme, students will be well-positioned to play vital roles in the building services engineering and innovation and technology industries in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond.
- Secondary Major in AIDA
The BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering plus AIDA is an interdisciplinary and integrated programme that equips students with a strong foundation in building sciences engineering/building services engineering, computer science, statistics, and mathematics. It fosters in students the technical and academic competence needed to excel in building sciences and engineering/building services engineering and to use AIDA techniques to solve contemporary problems in the field. This programme incorporates a block of AIDA subjects (e.g. programming, mathematics, statistics, big data, AI, and machine learning), focusing on building sciences engineering and building services engineering. Students are equipped with technical skills related to AI and data analytics and domain knowledge through a block of subjects chosen from the BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering programme and GUR subjects. The programme also includes an Integrated Capstone Project (ICP) to develop students’ capabilities in analysing and solving complex potential real-life problems and provide them with skills related to the systematic development and documentation of a significant piece of work.
