Students in the BSc (Hons) Building Engineering and Management (BEM) programme have the option to pursue a Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA). Admission to this Secondary Major programme is on a competitive basis, and admitted students are subject to a different credit requirement for graduation.
What's New
- Undergraduate
- Taught Postgraduate
- Undergraduate
All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of year one, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment, which considers a combination of entrance qualification score, Year One GPA, and interview performance.
Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes
This programme provides an excellent opportunity for students who would like to pursue an education in building engineering and construction management. The growing building construction industry in Hong Kong and neighbouring regions requires graduates who possess highly specialised skills in technology, management, and communication. Our students face intellectual challenges that promote self-development and enhance their problem-solving skills. Our well-trained graduates are in great demand as professional building engineers and construction managers because they can easily adapt to the changing needs of the construction industry and have developed the necessary expertise to plan, coordinate, supervise, and control complex building projects.
Programme Characteristics
Students are required to take 121 credits and 2 training credits during this 4-year programme. The subjects include Building Engineering and Technology, Management, Construction Economics, Project Works, a Capstone Project, and Languages.
Site visits and guest lectures are arranged throughout the course of study.
Practical training/internship (Work-Integrated Education, WIE) is a compulsory element of the curriculum. Students usually complete an internship during the summer period.
The Department maintains a mentorship scheme in which students are matched with senior professionals in the construction and real estate industry to gain insights into professional practice.
The Department also operates a student exchange programme, providing opportunities to study abroad for one academic semester at universities in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan, Mainland China, and elsewhere.
Professional Recognition
The programme has been granted professional accreditation by the following institutions:
- The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE);
- The Chartered Institute of Building in the UK (CIOB); and
- The Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM).
Career Prospects
Following appropriate training in industry, our graduates become building engineers and/or construction managers. Continued growth in Hong Kong’s building and infrastructure development sector has provided ample opportunities for challenging and rewarding careers. Our graduates usually take positions with construction companies or real estate development companies.
The programme covers the following subject components:
- Core/Discipline-specific Requirement (DSR) Subjects
Construction Technology, Structural Mechanics, Building Services, Temporary Works Design, Project Management & Procurement, Maintenance Technology & Management, Measurement, Documentation & Estimating, and Building Information Modelling (BIM) Applications and Development. - General University Requirement Subjects
Students are required to take 30 credits of General University Requirement (GUR) subjects. - Capstone Project
Students are required to complete a 6-credit Capstone Project. - Work-Integrated Education
The Department’s WIE element has a minimum duration of 4 weeks in full time placement (equivalent to 22 full days) or 176 hours in part-time placement. The Department has developed opportunities for students to work in firms or organisations during the summer in Hong Kong or overseas. - Students can choose elective subjects from a pool of designated subjects to suit their own career development and personal interests.
- Information on the subjects offered is available at www.bre.polyu.edu.hk.

Students in the BSc (Hons) BEM programme have the option to pursue a Secondary Major.
Features
- Innovative new structure programme pathway
Students can attain an Award Major in BEM and a Secondary Major in AIDA during their 4 years of undergraduate studies. - Digital technology and innovation in construction
This programme is designed to train students to become digitalisation specialists and leading innovators in the field of construction industry by adopting advanced digital technologies and data-driven approaches. Through interdisciplinary and hands-on training, students are equipped with core principles and practical knowledge in traditional construction technology and management, together with an in-depth and integrated understanding of various artificial intelligence and data analytics approaches. - Wide range of core and elective subjects
As their Secondary Major (AIDA) requirements, students can select core and elective subjects that range from basic programming fundamentals to advanced data science and artificial intelligence techniques, which are offered by different departments at PolyU (e.g. Building and Real Estate, Applied Mathematics, Computing, Electronic and Information Engineering, Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics). Courses are selected with consideration of their interests in specific fields of AIDA. Additionally, all BRE Level 3 and Level 4 subjects of a particular Major or discipline are offered as electives to students of another Major within the Department. - Internship and Field Study
Through internships and field studies, students can acquire practical skills and knowledge, learn industry best practices and the latest technology applications, and explore the changing digital technological needs of various stakeholders in the construction industry.
Remarks
-
The total credits required for graduation from the BSc(Hons) in BEM programme with the Secondary Major in AIDA are 144 [including 142 academic credits and 2 training credits (WIE)]. The details are as follows:
-
General University Requirements (GUR): 30 academic credits
-
BEM Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR): 91 academic credits + 2 training credits
- Secondary Major (AIDA) Requirements: 36 academic credits (core: 30 credits and elective: 6 credits)
-
15 credits are double-counted as both BEM discipline-specific requirements and Secondary Major (AIDA) requirements (4 subjects, including a 6-credit Integrated Capstone Project)
-
Total credits required: 30 credits (GUR) + 93 credits (BEM) + 36 credits (AIDA) – 15 credits (double-counted for BEM and AIDA) = 144 credits
-
-
Students opting to pursue a Secondary Major (AIDA) will choose only one elective subject, whereas other students in this Major (BEM) will choose two elective subjects within their respective programme curricula.
-
The BSc(Hons) in BEM Major Programme is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), and the Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM). The BSc(Hons) in BEM with Secondary Major (AIDA) also plans to seek accreditation from these professional bodies.
