Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes
This programme provides an excellent opportunity for students who wish to learn about the building engineering and construction management professions. The advancing building construction industry in Hong Kong and neighbouring regions requires graduates who possess highly specialised skills in technology, management and communication. Students are also given intellectual challenges that promote their development and enhance their problem-solving skills. Our well-trained graduates are in great demand as professional building engineers and construction managers, because they can easily adapt to the changing needs of the construction industry and have developed the expertise necessary to plan, coordinate, supervise and control the complex process of building projects.
Characteristics
Students in the 4-year undergraduate curriculum are required to take 121 credits and 2 training credits.
Site visits and guest lectures are arranged throughout the study period to give students a better understanding of industry practice.
The Department also maintains a mentorship scheme in which students are matched with employers and senior members of the professions to gain practical insights into professional practice.
The Department operates Work-Integrated Education (WIE) in collaboration with the University to help students in placement. WIE during the summer term is an integral element of the curriculum, and the completion of practical training is essential for fulfilling graduation requirements.
The Department also operates a student exchange programme to give students the opportunity to study abroad for one academic semester at universities in the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan, Mainland China, etc.
All admitted students embark on a Common Year One curriculum. After their first year of study, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to switch can choose their preferred departmental scheme/programme through a ranking assessment.
Professional Recognition
Professional accreditation has been granted from the following institutions:
- The Hong Kong Institute of Engineers (HKIE);
- The Chartered Institute of Building in the UK (CIOB); and
- The Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM).
Career Prospects
Following appropriate training in the industry, graduates can become building engineers and/or construction managers. The continuing growth of Hong Kong's building and infrastructure development offers opportunities for challenging and rewarding careers. Our graduates usually take up positions with construction companies or real estate development companies.
The programmes covers the following subject components:
*Core/Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR) Subjects
These subjects cover areas such as construction technology, structural mechanics, building services, temporary works design, project management and procurement, maintenance technology and management, measurement, documentation and estimation, and building information modelling (BIM) applications and development.
*General University Requirement (GUR) Subjects
Students are required to take 30 credits of GUR subjects.
*Capstone Project
Students are required to undertake a 6-credit Capstone Project.
*Work-Integrated Education
The Work-Integrated Education (WIE) element of the programme lasts for a minimum of 4 weeks for a full-time placement (equivalent to 22 full days) or 176 hours for a part-time placement. The Department has developed opportunities for students to work in firms in Hong Kong or overseas during the summer, which will count towards the WIE requirement.
Students can choose elective subjects from a pool of designated subjects to suit their own career development and personal interests.
Information on the subjects offered can be found at https://www.polyu.edu.hk/bre/.

The option of taking a Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to students enrolled in the BSc (Hons) Building Engineering and Management programme.
Features
- Innovative new programme pathway
Students attain a Major in Building Engineering and Management (BEM) and a Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) in the 4-year undergraduate programme.
- Digital technology and innovation in construction
The programme is designed to train students to become digitalisation specialists who will lead innovation in the construction industry by adopting advanced digital technologies and data-driven approaches. Students are equipped with core principles and practical knowledge in traditional construction technology and management as well as an in-depth and integrated understanding of various artificial intelligence and data analytics approaches through interdisciplinary and hands-on training.
- Wide range of core and elective subjects
Depending on their specific interests, students choose core and elective courses to fulfil the Secondary Major (AIDA) requirements. These range from courses in programming fundamentals to courses in advanced data science and artificial intelligence techniques, which are offered by different departments at PolyU (e.g. Building and Real Estate, Applied Mathematics, Computing, Electronic and Information Engineering, and Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics). Furthermore, all BRE Level 3 and Level 4 courses required for any major or disciplines are offered as electives to students enrolled in other majors in the Department.
- Internship and field study
Through internships and field study, students acquire practical skills and knowledge, learn industry best practices and the application of the latest technologies, and explore the changing digital technological needs of various stakeholders in the construction industry.
Remarks
1. In total, 144 credits are required to graduate from the BSc (Hons) in Building Engineering and Management (BEM) with a Secondary Major (AIDA) [including 142 academic credits and 2 training credits (Work-Integrated Education, WIE)]. The details are as follows.
- General University Requirements (GUR): 30 academic credits
- BEM Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR): 91 academic credits + 2 training credits
- Secondary Major (AIDA) Requirements: 36 academic credits (Core: 30 credits and Elective: 6 credits)
- Double-counted credits in both BEM Discipline-Specific Requirements and Secondary Major (AIDA) Requirements: 15 credits (4 courses including an Integrated Capstone Project of 6 credits)
- Total credits required: 30 credits (GUR) + 93 credits (BEM) + 36 credits (AIDA) – 15 credits (double counting for BEM and AIDA) = 144 credits
2. Students opting for the Secondary Major (AIDA) will have only one elective course, whereas students in the single major (BEM) will have two elective courses in their respective programme curricula.
3. The BSc (Hons) in Building Engineering and Management programme is accredited by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
