Aims & Characteristics

Programme Characteristics

LMS aims to provide innovation-driven education and scholarship in the fields of logistics and maritime transport, comprising high-quality research, professional training, and consulting activities related to shipping, transport, supply chain and operations management, and global business and logistics.

Our programmes provide students with a well-rounded business education centred on supply chain management and analytics, aviation management and finance, international shipping and transport logistics, and global business and logistics. The programmes are designed to meet the current and future needs of the relevant industries. They emphasise active student participation and industry collaboration.

After completing the Common Year One curriculum, students will be invited to choose one of the following degrees, indicating the field of study in which they will specialise until graduation:

  1. Aviation Management and Finance (BBA-AMF)

  2. International Shipping and Transport Logistics (BBA-ISTL)

  3. Supply Chain Management and Analytics (BBA-SCMA)

  4. Global Business and Logistics (BBA-GBL)*
*Dual Degree with the Copenhagen Business School, Denmark

All students in the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, such as leadership training camps, peer tutoring, and mentorship.

If students wish, and subject to availability, they can spend a semester studying at another university overseas or in mainland China, with the credits counting towards their PolyU degree.

BBA (Hons) in Aviation Management and Finance

This programme equips students with a well-rounded business education with a specialisation in aviation management and finance; an in-depth understanding of how airports, airlines, aircraft leasing companies, government agencies, regulators, and other professional groups, such as financial services firms and consultants, contribute to the functioning of aviation markets; and the necessary background to become an integral part of the aviation industry.

BBA (Hons) in International Shipping and Transport Logistics

This programme provides a well-rounded business education, as well as the opportunity to specialise in international shipping and logistics management. It enables students to acquire broad knowledge in maritime transport and logistics within a general broad framework of international transport and trade.

The programme promotes the acquisition of strong management skills in areas such as communication and presentation, leadership and teamwork, problem-solving, and effective use of information technology. Graduates are equipped with the skills required to understand and manage maritime organisations and personnel.

BBA (Hons) in Supply Chain Management and Analytics

Supply chain management focuses on how firms optimise resources in a logistics network that delivers value to end customers. As Hong Kong is a logistics and trading centre of global importance, supply chain management is particularly relevant to many businesses and industries. With the advancement of technological innovation and business analytics, the integration of management knowledge and analytical skills has become essential for supply chain managers to make effective decisions.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education specialising in supply chain management and analytics. The curriculum aims to develop students’ skills and knowledge in business and supply chain analytics, information technology and innovation, operations and cross-functional management, international business, and transport logistics to meet the current and future needs of the logistics and supply chain industries.

Dual Degree with the Copenhagen Business School, Denmark

BBA (Hons) in Global Business and Logistics [PolyU]
BSc in International Business (Logistics and Supply Chain Management) [CBS]

The Dual Degree programme combines the strengths of the BBA in Global Business and Logistics with the BSc in International Business, providing a comprehensive education in international trade, supply chain management, and global business strategies. This programme equips students with essential skills in cross-cultural management, global marketing, and sustainable supply chain practices, as well as a deep understanding of the economic, cultural, and political factors that influence global business. Through theoretical studies, practical applications, and international exposure, graduates are prepared for successful careers in multinational corporations, logistics, consulting firms, and international organisations.

The Copenhagen Business School (CBS) was established in 1917 by the Danish Society for the Advancement of Business Education and Research. Today, with 20,000 students and 1,500 employees, CBS is one of the largest business schools in Europe and one of 8 Danish universities. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programmes in business, typically with an interdisciplinary and international focus. CBS is accredited by EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System), AMBA (Association of MBAs), as well as AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), making it one of the few schools in the world to hold triple accreditation.

Students admitted to the programme will spend their first two years at PolyU and their final two years at CBS. Upon completion of the programme, students will be awarded two business degrees: BBA (Hons) in Global Business and Logistics from PolyU and BSc in International Business (Logistics and Supply Chain Management) from CBS.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

To graduate, each student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department has developed opportunities for students to work in firms either during the summer holidays or alongside their studies. Summer placements may be offered in Hong Kong, mainland China, or overseas. These work experiences and other forms of professional experience count towards the WIE requirement.

Admission to the Scheme

All students follow a Common Year One curriculum under the Faculty. The common curriculum gives students approximately one year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, making it easier for them to choose a Major programme.

The decision to admit students to a Major programme will be made by the Department based on the students’ choice and their overall Year One GPA. Students will be asked to rank their Major programme choices during semester 2 of Year One for the Department’s consideration and approval.

Towards the end of year one, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment, which considers a combination of entrance qualification score, Year One GPA, and interview performance.

Student Message

Life is about embracing challenges, choosing to keep moving forward, and enjoying the journey. This is certainly the case with our time spent studying International Shipping and Transport Logistics. The University and the Department offer us many opportunities to grow and expand our horizons through various activities. I am always eager to take on various roles and participate in diverse activities, such as competitions, exchange visits, and mentorship, to challenge myself. Participating in competitions is the best way for me to identify my strengths and weaknesses.

Over the last few years, I have taken part in several local and overseas competitions on different themes, most of them related to technology and business development. One of the most memorable competitions was the Cyberport University Partnership Programme (CUPP) 2019, where our team demonstrated our fintech ideas. The Department also gave us the invaluable opportunity to join the Entrepreneurship Boot Camp at the University of Chicago in the US, where we learnt from the world’s top researchers. Their advice helped us to refine our business ideas to fill a gap in the market.

Taking part in competitions is not just about winning and losing; it is also a way to improve oneself. I always find room to grow, because each competition is unique; each time I focus on a different topic, work with different teammates, and face different competitors. Although each team member has his/her own tasks, teamwork is a crucial success factor, especially when members come from different backgrounds. Putting myself in my teammates’ shoes enables me to resolve conflicts while working under pressure. Working effectively with different teams is an essential skill in any workplace.

Competitions also help me to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. It is always fascinating to learn from others and meet people from all walks of life. The friendships built within your team and with other competitors are a great bonus!

LAW Wing Sum

Graduating from the Bachelor’s degree programme offered by LMS inspired me to pursue a career in the liner shipping industry.

The programme equipped me with a fundamental understanding of business and industry-specific knowledge. In addition to theoretical knowledge, I acquired up-to-date practical knowledge of the industry.

In addition to my academic studies, the Department provided me with many resources and opportunities to explore and develop new skills. During my studies at PolyU, I participated in an international exchange trip to the Netherlands, where I expanded my social circle by interacting with people from all over the world. I also completed two overseas internships, in Beijing and Singapore. They gave me many insights into the dynamism of the work environment.

All of these experiences enriched my university life and helped me to establish myself as a competent practitioner. Before graduating, I received valuable support and advice from faculty and alumni regarding my future career development.

I am very grateful for my education at PolyU and proud to be one of the graduates of this programme.

LEUNG Chun Kit, Kris
