  • Civil Discipline
  • Environmental Discipline
  • Geotechnical Discipline
  • Structural Discipline
  • Logistics & Transportation Discipline (upon completion of specific elective subjects)

Career Prospects

The majority of our graduates embark upon rewarding careers with government departments and authorities, engineering consultants and construction contractors soon after graduation. After a few years of work experience, many graduates further advance their careers by sitting an examination to become professional engineers. Other graduates pursue higher degrees at prestigious overseas institutions.

Curriculum
  • Comprehensive subjects covering theoretical and practical knowledge in the fields of civil engineering, environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering, as well as construction management.

  • The final-year curriculum provides in-depth exposure to specific fields of interest through a wide range of advanced elective subjects. Students conduct a Design Project, which requires them to integrate the knowledge and skills that they have acquired in their studies, and an Individual Capstone Project, which gives them research experience and thus facilitates their further intellectual development.

Student Message

It is an honour to be a graduate of the BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering programme at PolyU. Reflecting on the past four years, I can confidently say that the programme was exceptionally well-rounded, covering every key aspect of civil engineering, with an emphasis on structural engineering. The curriculum introduces a range of themes and topics from fundamental civil engineering concepts to real-world design issues, and it helped me appreciate the complexity and ingenuity behind the high-rise buildings I see every day in Hong Kong.

Beyond the substantial knowledge and skills provided, the career support is also outstanding. Numerous prominent companies in the industry regularly visit PolyU to host career talks and recruitment sessions, offering many opportunities related to our interests. Additionally, the professors and tutors at PolyU are passionate, supportive, knowledgeable and always ready to provide guidance on both academic and career-related matters.

All in all, this four-year journey at PolyU has been immensely rewarding, and I have grown both intellectually and personally.

LO King Yin

Time at university passes quickly. It feels like only yesterday that I was a student at PolyU, but now I have started my professional journey in the civil engineering industry. Studying at university was challenging, but it prepared me well for my career and further education.

During my years at PolyU, I studied various subjects covering different aspects of the construction industry and areas of civil engineering. This journey of exploration deepened my interest and developed my knowledge. The degree programme offered comprehensive training that brought me practical experience. For example, the programme’s internship component provided me with opportunities to gain insights into industry practices and to apply my skills in real-life projects. Moreover, the design project and the final-year project that I undertook enabled me to apply my knowledge in meaningful and impactful ways.

I enjoyed my student experience at PolyU, as it not only prepared me to become a professional but also gave me invaluable support for my academic and career development.

TANG Cheuk Yin

Pursuing the BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering programme has been a fruitful journey that equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of fundamental civil engineering principles and the essential skills to thrive in the industry. I gained well-rounded training and exposure to various disciplines in civil engineering, including geotechnical, structural, hydraulic, transportation and environmental engineering.

The most interesting and stimulating subject was Engineers in Society, which showed me the problems that society faces and how engineers can use their professional expertise to contribute to the public good. This subject also delves into the ethical aspects of engineering projects, prompting deep and meaningful reflection.

Throughout my studies, the University and the Department provided me with crucial support in both academic and career planning. Many companies generously provide scholarships to encourage students to study hard and strive for excellence. Thanks to the financial support I received, I was able to broaden and enrich my student experience by participating in various academic and volunteer activities. All of these educational and personal development opportunities prepared me well for my career.
