Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

We equip graduates with the technical and academic competence needed to work in building services engineering.

This programme meets the demand for locally trained professional and innovative building services engineers in the fields of consultancy, contracting, building management and research and development.

Our graduates also have a broad range of personal skills, such as the ability to communicate effectively, think critically and learn independently.

Programme Characteristics

Students learn the art and science of providing safe, healthy and energy-efficient built environments that have minimal adverse environmental impacts. They also face intellectual challenges that further their development towards taking up management roles in the profession.

Students have the opportunity to work in teams, lead small projects, work independently and interact with highly qualified and professional staff. They also have access to a variety of design software and laboratory facilities.

Local and offshore summer placement opportunities are offered.

Students who join the Student Exchange Programme can study at universities in the United States, Europe, Australia, Russia, Southeast Asia, or Mainland China for a semester.

Students are regularly awarded scholarships by professional bodies and major organisations in Hong Kong.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) has granted full accreditation to the BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering.

Graduates of this programme may then qualify for Scheme A training with the HKIE in the following disciplines: (i) Building Services, (ii) Fire, (iii) Environmental* and (iv) Energy. Academic programmes in the Building Services discipline that the HKIE accredits are reciprocally recognised by the UK's Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

* Upon completion of specific elective subjects.

Career Prospects

BEng(Hons) graduates have good career prospects in the building construction and real estate sectors.

New building construction and a concentration of sophisticated buildings in Hong Kong provide numerous attractive employment opportunities. As the programme is widely recognised, these opportunities extend to Mainland China and overseas.

Our graduates commonly begin their careers as trainee engineers in government departments, consulting firms, contracting companies, property management companies or utility companies.

First Class Honours graduates can consider research an attractive alternative, mainly because building development in Hong Kong embraces advanced technology.

Curriculum

Students are admitted to the Senior Year of the 4-year degree programme. The total credits requirement for the senior year curriculum is 68 academic credits plus 3 training credits.

Students are required to take 44 credits for compulsory subjects and 15 credits for elective subjects.

Students are considered for credit transfers based on their previous academic performance in AD/HD programmes. Students not meeting the equivalent standard of the undergraduate degree Language Communication Requirements (LCR) will be required to take degree LCR subjects.

Year 1 applies foundational knowledge to the design and operation of major building services engineering systems. In the final year, students will undertake a Capstone Research Project.

Student Message

As a Hong Kong Polytechnic University student studying Building Services Engineering (now Building Sciences and Engineering), I had the opportunity to learn from some of the most knowledgeable and experienced professors in the field. The curriculum was rigorous and challenging but also extremely rewarding.

One of the highlights of my school career was the opportunity to work on various group system design projects with classmates from diverse backgrounds. These projects allowed us to apply the theoretical knowledge that we had learned in class and cultivated our teamwork and communication skills, which will be very useful in my future career.

Aside from academics, the university offered a wide range of extracurricular activities such as sports clubs, workshops and social events that provided opportunities to meet new people and expand my horizons.

Overall, my experience at the PolyU was challenging and rewarding, and it has prepared me well for the future.

LEUNG Tsz Ying

I am very fortunate to have undertaken this programme, as I have been able to learn from many world-class professors. The department also provides ample professional laboratory facilities, which gave me a high-quality learning environment and process. My most memorable experience was my third-year internship at Sanfield (Management) Limited, a Sun Hung Kai Properties subsidiary, where I was able to get real-world practice with the latest technologies and standards that I had learned in class, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM).

In my fourth year, I had the opportunity to do a semester exchange at the National University of Singapore, which allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, broaden my horizons and learn about local green building designs.

After graduation, I aim to obtain professional qualifications and become a registered building services engineer. Studying in the BSE programme has also enabled me to participate in the "Scheme A" training programme, which has helped me progress smoothly towards my goal.
