Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

This programme provides an excellent opportunity for students who would like to pursue an education in the building engineering and construction management profession. The advancing building construction industry in Hong Kong and neighbouring regions requires graduates who possess highly specialised skills in technology, management and communication. Our well-trained graduates are in great demand as professional building engineers and construction managers because they can easily adapt to the changing needs of the construction industry and have developed the expertise that is necessary to plan, coordinate, supervise and control the complex process of building projects.

Characteristics

The senior year curriculum is derived from the 4-year full time undergraduate programme BSc (Hons) in Building Engineering and Management.

Students in the 4-year undergraduate curriculum are required to take 121 credits and 2 training credits. For senior year intakes with an Associate Degree/Higher Diploma qualification in building engineering and technology or equivalent, 69 credits and 2 training credits are required for graduation.

Site visits and guest lectures are arranged throughout the study to provide students with a better understanding of the practice in the industry.

The Department also maintains a mentorship scheme in which students are matched with employers and senior members of the professions to gain practical insights into professional practice.

The Department operates Work-Integrated Education (WIE) in collaboration with the University to help students in placement. WIE during the summer term is an integral element of the curriculum, and the completion of practical training is an essential criterion for fulfilling graduation requirements.

The Department also operates a student exchange programme to provide students with opportunities to study abroad for one academic semester at Universities in UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Taiwan and the Mainland, etc.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

Professional accreditation has been granted from the following institutions:

  • The Hong Kong Institute of Engineers (HKIE);

Career Prospects

Following appropriate training in industry, graduates will become building engineers and/or construction managers. The continuing growth of Hong Kong's building and infrastructure development offers opportunities for challenging and rewarding careers. Our graduates usually take up positions with construction companies or real estate development companies.

Students can further their studies, for example, by entering our MSc in Project Management or MSc in Construction and Real Estate programmes offered by the Department.

Student Message

I truly enjoyed my studies in the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE). My final-year dissertation was awarded the Best Individual Dissertation of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE – Building Division). Together with my academic performance, my participation in extracurricular activities brought me the honour of being named Outstanding Student by both the Faculty of Construction and Environment and BRE in 2012.

My studies at BRE offered me a solid foundation for launching my career. After graduation, I joined one of the most challenging projects in Hong Kong: the Express Rail Link West Kowloon Terminus. I led the building envelope works on M+ Museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District and became a senior project manager, delivering one of Asia’s largest new-build data centres. I was one of the HKIE President's Proteges in 2015, and I served as a Council Member for the Hong Kong Construction Association’s Young Members Society in 2016. After obtaining my professional qualification in engineering, I pursued an MBA and SM dual-degree programme at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. I received MIT fellowships and scholarships, as well as the HKIE Young Engineers Scholarship, to support my studies. I had ample opportunities to work on initiatives related to advanced technologies, entrepreneurship and sustainability. I am now joining the global operations leadership rotational programme with Amgen.

I am grateful that BRE enabled me to be a part of the thriving construction scene and prepared me to work on impactful projects on a global scale.
