External student awards in 2021 / 2022
Congratulations to Thomas Wong Ho-lam, a final-year Communication Design student at PolyU's School of Design. He was named best graphic designer and ranked first in the overall category at the Global Student Design Competition 2021. The competition, which received thousands of entries, was organised by DesignRush, a B2B platform connecting brands with professional agencies.
Congratulations! Three PolyU students, among those from other universities, have been selected as the awardees of the Innovation and Technology Scholarship 2021 organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. The three awardees from PolyU demonstrated excellence in the highly competitive selection process. They are:
Cheung Yin Chi (Year 3 student in Occupational Therapy) who plans to develop a smart home system for the elderly with the use of ambient assisted technology and artificial intelligence;
Loo Hiu Tung (Year 3 student in Biomedical Engineering) who wants to modify the design of the ankle-foot orthosis for stroke patients, so that they can wear it more easily and comfortably; and
Ng Chit Yui Jeffrey (Year 3 student in Physiotherapy) who intends to incorporate virtual reality and augmented reality technologies into rehabilitation training for the elderly.
Congratulations to two teams of PolyU students who bagged two prizes in the Huawei ICT Competition Hong Kong SAR 2021-2022! For the first time in Hong Kong, the competition was jointly organised by Huawei and Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, with a view to establishing an interactive platform for students, teachers, government and enterprises, and also further contributing to a sustainable talent ecosystem in the city.

External student awards in 2022 / 2023
Four PolyU students who were awarded the Innovation and Technology Scholarship, which is jointly organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission, HSBC, and The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. The students’ achievements were recognised at an Award Presentation Ceremony held on 13 June.
PolyU have achieved outstanding results at Hong Kong Techathon 2023. PolyU teams took away seven of the 16 prizes in this competition, including three Champions, one First Runner-up, two Second Runner–ups and one Best Presentation Awards. Almost 200 PolyU students entered the competition. PolyU teams were champions in three of the four categories in the competition. The champion teams were 417 Tech in the ArtTech & EdTech category, Fleming MedLab in the Healthcare & GeronTech category and BoostRider in the Smart Cities & Sustainability category.
A team of PolyU master’s students won the Gold Prize in the Engineers Week “Innovation Competition” for their project “The Moss” – an Internet of Things system that supports a future city that is highly integrated with green energy, sustainability, and intelligent transportation. The system displays the personal physical condition and life data to individual users and collects and processes the overall information of the city.
Advised by Dr Huang Hailong, Assistant Professor of the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, the team includes leader Mr Cheng Li (Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering); Mr Zeng Haoxu (Civil and Environment Engineering); Ms Yu Lingyan (Engineering Business Management); Ms Wang Fuqiu (Building Environment and Energy Engineering); and Ms Cheng Jie (Electrical Engineering). Mr Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government, presented the award to the team.
Lee Kwan-ho, a second-year Product Design student, won the First Runner-up prize (Student Group) in the 24th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.
External student awards in 2020 / 2021
A total of 14 undergraduate students with a track record of academic excellence and community service have been awarded scholarships by the AIA Foundation. They will receive an award of HK$50,000 each year throughout their undergraduate studies, together with valuable mentoring opportunities.
Three PolyU students were among the recipients of this scholarship launched by The Hongkong Bank Foundation to support undergraduates’ studies, internships or activities that can help fulfil their career aspirations in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). They were each awarded HK$80,000 as an endorsement of their career development plans in the GBA.
The three recipients were: Allan Chan Cheuk-yiu from BEng (Hons) in Electronic and Information Engineering; Emily Wong Chin-wai from BA (Hons) in Social Policy and Administration; and Sharon Choi Yuet-sum from BA (Hons) in Communication Design.
Occupational Therapy students from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) grabbed five design awards in the 2020 Global Student Innovation Challenge at the 14th International Convention on Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology (i-CREATe 2020), which was hosted online by Taipei Medical University. Among the design awards won by PolyU students this year include the prestigious Silver and Bronze awards.
A student from PolyU's Department of Building and Real Estate, Ada Lo Wing-yan (Year 2), has won the championship in the “Maintenance and Appreciation of Historical Buildings Creativity Competition – Tiny Model (Public Category)” organised by The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) with her miniature model “Rejuvenation”.
“Rejuvenation” is a miniature of the Grade 1 historical building “Lui Seng Chun”. Built to a 1:200 scale, the model nicely illustrates the building’s unique architectural features as well as its internal and external structures before and after revitalisation.

Tong Cheuk-ying (BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering, Year 2) won The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) scholarship for her outstanding academic achievements.
Ching Chi-fung (BSc (Hons) in Radiography, Year 3), Chow Tsz-ching (BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy, Year 3), Tse Lok-yung (BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy, Year 4), and Wong Lok-lam (BA (Hons) Scheme in Fashion and Textiles, Year 4) were awarded the Innovation and Technology Scholarships sponsored and supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission and The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.
External student awards in 2019 / 2020
A student from School of Design, Wendy Law, received the Hong Kong Best Design Award among the 12 finalists at the Techstyle for Social Good International Competition 2019, with her Human Scale class project Aesthesis — The partial hand accessories for amputees designed for her mother who lost her fingers in an accident.
A PolyU Mechanical Engineering student team won the Gold Award of ASM Technology Award 2019. The team members, Roy Chow Hung-ming, Shin Ji-ho and Someshwar Rudra Ajay, supervised by Dr Henry Chu and Dr Curtis Ng, competed with HKU, HKUST, CUHK and CityU.
The PolyU ME team project ASME Competition Robot Development & Vision Based Target Alignment stood out from the rest and triumphed in the competition. The team was awarded HK$50,000 as a scholarship. And the PolyU Faculty of Engineering, as the institution of the Champion, received a donation of HK$100,000 as an encouragement to the outstanding students of the Faculty.
BA year-four student Wesker Au received the champion of the Hong Kong Fur Design Competition 2019, which was held at The Peninsula on 10 January. Themed 'Amazing Nature', the competition attracted over 240 submissions from 120 students with the participation of five local design institutes.
A team of BEng in Mechanical Engineering (ME) students won the 2nd Runner-up in the 2019 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Student Design Competition (SDC) Finals held on 9 November 2019, in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.
The team, comprising year-four undergraduate students, Parth Maheshwari, Maral Shagatay and Kwan Kai-lok, supervised by Ir Dr Curtis NG of ME developed an agile robot which can swiftly move around to pick and hold different sizes of balls. With tactical strategy, their robot stood out from other competing robots and eventually made it to the Final Four and brought home the 2nd Runner-up!
In the HK4As Kam Fan Award, PolyU Advertising Design students garnered five awards, making PolyU the most awarded school among eight universities and institutions in 2019.
A team which consists of four students — Cheng Tsz-yin, Cheung Chi-ho, Ng Wing-ki, Wong Chun-hei — was awarded the Gold and the Best of Show Awards with their project Meatless Meat Relocation.Two teams of Occupational Therapy students from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) won awards at the 13th International Convention on Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology (i-CREATe 2019) held in Canberra, Australia. The teams won Gold and Bronze awards in the Design Category of the Global Student Innovation Challenge of i-CREATe.
The winning products, “Snaker Spoon” (Gold award) and “Nailed it!” (Bronze award), were developed by Kristy Fung’s team and Elaine Mo’s team respectively. “Snaker Spoon” aimed at both children and adults with special needs, in particular those with upper limb disabilities. It can be twisted like a snake and the angle of the spoon can be adjusted to meet the user’s needs and allow for independent feeding “Nailed it!” is a product designed to help people with weak pinch strength and poor finger dexterity. It allows the user to clip nails using a palmar grasp in neutral wrist position effortlessly.
External student awards in 2018 / 19
A PolyU team of Mechanical Engineering students of the undergraduate won the Champion and the Most Innovative Awards in the 7th IMechE Greater China Design Competition held at Guangzhou on 24-25 March 2018.
The PolyU team, comprised of third-year undergraduate students, Shin Ji-ho, Roy Chow Hung-ming and Rudra Someshwar, under the supervision of Dr Henry Chu and Ir Dr Curtis Ng of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, designed and created a robot, which could successfully move across different terrains for material transport. The PolyU team robot stood out from other competitors. The robot topped off the challenge in the competition with the full smoothness and highest efficiency.
Two teams of occupational therapy students from PolyU’s Department of Rehabilitation Sciences (RS) received awards at the 12th International Convention on Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology (i-CREATe) held on 13-16 July 2018 in Shanghai.
Four Master of Occupational Therapy students pocketed the Silver Award under the Design category. Their invention, The Cupensator, minimizes unwanted oscillations. Users can hold the cup and drink in a firm manner, making the daily activity of drinking safe, independent and effective.
Meanwhile, a team of BSc(Hons) in Occupational Therapy Year 3 students walked away with the Best Presentation Award under the Design category for their StoPanel, which aims to increase the independence of visually-impaired users in taking public transport.
A team of four ITC students participated in the prestigious Future Retail Challenge student competition in Madrid, Spain on 19 April 2018, and were awarded the championship.
Megan Ko, Cherry Lau, Megan Leung and Lucy Yip won the competition with their concept of ‘V.Farm’, which meant vertical farming, for a building. The farm would be integrated with advanced technologies and include components such as aeroponic and hydroponic systems, smart LED lights, robot gardeners, as well as artificial intelligence (AI). By renting the plots to individuals, families, and retailers, together with other green retailtainment experience services, the initiative was anticipated to break-even in two years, which was the key element to winning the championship.
A team of Mechanical Engineering students of the undergraduate — Fung Man-yi, Wong Hei-wa and Pang Wei-fong — won the Champion and the Best Innovative Award in the HKIE Joint Student Chapters Competition 2018 with their final-year capstone project titled Design and Construction of an Innovative Energy Conversion Device under the supervision of Dr Lam Chun-ki.
A team of BEng in Mechanical Engineering students won the 1st Runner-up in The 2018 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Student Design Competition (SDC) held on 11 November 2018 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
The PolyU team, comprised of year-four undergraduate students, Stanley Go, Lam Kah-cheng and Cheung Lap-wing, under the supervision of Ir Dr Curtis Ng, designed and created a three-battery-powered robot with a strategic mind which could effectively shoot balls right to the competitors’ gates and strongly defense its own gate, this ended up in scoring high marks to win the competition.
Bao Qiancheng, a year-four Product Design student won the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship 2018. His impressive design was inspired by the perspective lines of the crowded skyscrapers and neon signs in the metropolis Hong Kong. These inspirations became the radical direction shoelace system and the translucent soft TPU bar fused on the shoes. The design outcome was a clean and iconic silhouette and innovative structure, which made it stand out from all the competitors.
Three ITC graduating BA students received awards at The 8th Hong Kong Young Knitwear Designers’ Contest which was organized by the Knitwear Innovation and Design Society (KIDS).
Keith Chen Jianfeng, won the Champion for his design titled NOH: Image Fusion. His design idea was inspired by Noh. Noh is a Japanese musical drama in which the leading actors wear masks.
Dorothy Yeung Pui-mei, was the 2nd runner-up with her collection titled Smile+. Smile+ was inspired by a Hong Kong news report and her own personal experience.
Shirley Yeung Chit-yiu, received the Best Use of Australian Merino Wool Award. Her collection titled I am worse than you think was inspired by the Japanese underworld.
