PolyU PhD Student’s Journal Article Selected as Featured Paper in Engineering Structures
A journal paper titled “Development of modular and reusable AI models for fast predicting fire behaviour of steel columns in structural systems”, authored by Ms QIU Jin, PhD student from the Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering at PolyU, was selected as the Featured Paper in Volume 297 of Engineering Structures in 2023 by the journal’s editor team. Dr JIANG Liming, Assistant Professor from the same department, was the supervisor of Ms QIU. The paper featured the application of AI for high efficiency numerical simulation. This paper developed modular AI models to predict steel column behaviour in fire, capturing local behaviour such as buckling and providing global behaviour variables to the structural system model as a novel AI-FE hybrid simulation framework. Whilst implemented to anticipate column behaviour in a plane frame structural system, the AI-FE approach showed high efficiency in predicting the local behaviour and global responses.
