PolyU Students, Researchers Secure Rank 2 and Second Prize at 2023 IEEE ITSS Student Competition in Pedestrian Behavior Prediction
A team of PolyU students and researchers secured rank two at the 2023 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS) Student Competition in Pedestrian Behavior Prediction. The team was also awarded the second prize at the Track 1: Pedestrian Intent Prediction of the competition for a project entitled “An Ensemble Multimodal-LSTM with Data Augmentation for Pedestrian Intention Prediction.” A total of 36 teams participated in the competition.
Supervised by Dr HUANG Chao, Research Assistant Professor from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Prof. FU Xiaowen, Professor of the same department, and Dr HUANG Hailong, Assistant Professor from the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, the awarded team consisted of Mr HU Fengqing, team leader and PhD student from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering; Dr WU Jingda, postdoctoral fellow from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering; Ms CUI Gege, PhD student from the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering; and Mr WANG Mingfeng, MSc student from the Department of Applied Mathematics.
The winning project aimed to develop more accurate and robust methods for predicting pedestrian behaviour in street crossing, based on deep neural networks, to ensure the safety of both pedestrians and autonomous vehicles.
The 2023 IEEE ITSS Student Competition in Pedestrian Behavior Prediction was organised by the IEEE ITSS, Technical Committee on Human-Centered AI in Transportation.
