Prof. MUI Kwok Wai, Horace is a Professor in the Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering (BEEE) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). He holds a First Class Bachelor’s degree in Building Services Engineering and earned his Ph.D. from PolyU. His research focuses on critical areas within building and environmental engineering, including indoor environmental quality, indoor air quality, the built environment, and energy-efficient building technologies. His work often addresses bioaerosol transportation in indoor environments, thermal comfort, and the performance of building ventilation and drainage systems. He has been recognised as one of the top 2% of scientists worldwide by Stanford University.
In addition to his academic endeavors, Prof. Mui is a Fellow of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (FHKIE) and is actively involved in several professional organisations, including the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). He is also a Registered Professional Engineer (RPE) in the Building Services Discipline in Hong Kong and a UK Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Prof. Mui is committed to community service and has held various leadership roles. He has served as Vice-President of the Fire Safety Ambassador Honorary Presidents’ Association and has participated in advisory committees related to fire safety and building management. His dedication to public service is evident in his involvement with community panels and organisations aimed at improving living conditions for underprivileged populations. For example, he has provided consultancy to enhance environmental conditions in elderly homes operated by The Hong Kong Society for the Aged (SAGE) and Tung Wah Hospital Group. Beyond his research and community contributions, Prof. Mui has shared his findings globally through presentations, media engagements, and participation in conferences and workshops.
In 2021, he established the College of Undergraduate Researchers and Innovators (CURI) Residential College, which focuses on "Achieving Academic and Research Excellence through Inquiry-based Learning." As the Master of this new residential college, he aims to create an enriching environment for students that encourages academic exploration and innovation.
In his role as Chief Hall Warden, Prof. Mui has worked to foster a collaborative living-learning environment. His expertise in building environment and community service continues to enhance both the experiences of students and the broader community. He strives to inspire those around him, promoting a culture of excellence and social responsibility within the engineering profession. |
