Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme aims to nurture professionals capable of providing physiotherapy services to promote clients’ health and meet society’s healthcare needs. Graduates possess the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes required to practise physiotherapy reliably, ethically, and effectively. As lifelong learners and active consumers of the professional and scientific literature, graduates are able to advance in the profession through continuing education and by participating in investigative and evaluative projects. Their sense of social and professional responsibility is further reflected in their efforts to educate clients, the public, and the next generation of therapists.

Programme Characteristics

The curriculum is forward-looking, with a strong scientific base. Clinical education and university-based education are integrated using the latest teaching and learning resources.

Placement Opportunities

The Department aims to train students to develop global perspectives and actively encourages them to seize opportunities to experience life overseas. The Department fully supports student exchanges for clinical placements. Year 3/4 students can undertake five-week clinical placements at overseas universities. In previous years, placements have been organised at universities in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Taiwan, Thailand, Sweden, Switzerland, and the US.

Professional Recognition

Graduates are eligible to register with the Physiotherapists Board of Hong Kong.

Career Prospects

Our graduates have a high rate of employment and a wide range of career options, from acute care hospitals, special schools, and homes for the elderly to community settings and private practice.

Physiotherapists can specialise, take up managerial positions, or become involved in clinical education and research. Opportunities for further education, such as in MSc, MPhil, or PhD programmes, are also available.

Graduates meet the normal entry requirements for the position of Physiotherapist II for the Hospital Authority, private organisations (private hospitals, private clinics, nursing homes, and homes for the elderly), the Department of Health, the Education Bureau (special schools, early education and training centres), subsidised non-governmental organisations, and the Social Welfare Department (community centres, sheltered workshops, and special childcare centres).

Curriculum

This is a four-year, full-time programme that involves university-based study and clinical education. The programme comprises four main groups of subjects: basic sciences, professional studies, clinical education, and the University Core Curriculum. Student Message

Studying in the Physiotherapy programme at PolyU gave me the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of rehabilitation. As a non-local student, I am lucky to have local friends with whom I can always hang out in Hong Kong, and experience the amazing culture of the city. The Year 1 courses are extremely interesting and are essential for acquiring fundamental concepts before learning more complex skills and techniques for rehabilitation. The professors here are extremely enthusiastic about sharing their extensive knowledge with us, broadening our understanding and views. They encourage us to study with friends, so we can exchange views and inspire each other. This enabled me to develop my critical thinking skills. The many group projects and presentations are both challenging and fascinating, as they give us the opportunity to work with students from different universities and of different nationalities. I made friends, learnt to work in a team efficiently, and strengthened my communication skills. To conclude, I feel very comfortable and happy studying at PolyU.

Ng Wa Seng

After completing my second year of the BSc(Hons) in Physiotherapy programme, I am confident that I have made the best choice for my future career. The programme provided me with the theoretical and practical knowledge I will need to become a competent physiotherapist.

Lectures, seminars, and tutorials equip us with the fundamental theories of physiotherapy and teach us to draw the right conclusion from the information given. This allows us to acquire the fundamental skills needed to interact with real future patients. When encountering academic difficulties, I always receive assistance and support from the professors and teaching faculty.

One of the highlights of this programme is clinical education, which gives students the opportunity to connect with patients in the hospital under the guidance of clinical educators. This enables us to put into practice the theories we have learnt.

This course not only strengthened my academic foundation and equipped me with the skills needed for my future career as a physiotherapist but also enabled me to cultivate the appropriate attitude when treating patients through guided real-life experiences. For these reasons and more, I have never regretted choosing this course as it has improved my career prospects.

Chan Ieng Tong

Studying in the Physiotherapy programme at Polyu set me on an extraordinary expedition, transforming me into a physiotherapist imbued with expertise and empathy.

The courses begin by instilling fundamental concepts, laying a solid foundation before delving into the complexities of rehabilitation. The laboratory facilities and practical classes allowed me to connect theory and practice, enabling me to hone my skills. Meanwhile, group work allowed me to collaborate with diverse students, fostering collaborative learning and improving alongside my peers.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this programme has been the unwavering support of my professors. They went above and beyond to ensure my academic success when I often had to participate in sports competitions. They worked tirelessly to help me catch up on missed work, demonstrating their dedication to supporting their students’ well-being.

As a non-local student, I felt incredibly fortunate to be part of this welcoming environment. The generosity of my peers in sharing learning materials and the encouragement of my professors have been truly heartwarming. I made many cherished friends and felt deeply appreciated. This motivated me to study hard and strive for excellence, to be confident in my future career.
