The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Scheme in Mechanical Engineering includes the following two degrees:
- BEng (Hons) in Intelligent Robotics Engineering 智能機械人工程學(榮譽)工學士 (subject to approval)
- BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering 機械工程學(榮譽)工學士
Students are allowed to enrol in either degree without further assessment. The credit requirements of this Scheme are indicative only and are subject to revision.
Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics 「人工智能及數據分析」副主修課程
- Mechanical engineering combined with AI knowledge offers a unique and highly valued skill set for students. They can create innovative products, analyse data, and optimise performance, making them valuable in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and robotics. This integrated discipline offers great career opportunities for those interested in cutting-edge technologies.
- The option of a Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to students in the BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering. The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers two undergraduate programmes, namely the BEng (Hons) in Intelligent Robotics Engineering (Subject to approval) and the BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, both structured under the BEng (Hons) Scheme in Mechanical Engineering. Students admitted to the Scheme will study together for the first two years and then complete their preferred programme (one of the two programmes above) from the third year onwards (normally within two years). This arrangement gives them complete flexibility and allows them to make their own choice of studies after gaining a better understanding of the programmes and their career prospects. There is no quota restriction on the number of students enrolled in the BEng (Hons) in Intelligent Robotics Engineering or the BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering programme.

Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes
Intelligent robotics is an emerging engineering discipline that advances many of the systems that modern society relies on, such as autonomous manufacturing systems, automated consumer products, automated experimental systems, intelligent vehicles, the Internet of Things (IoT), healthcare, medical devices, and many more. The BEng (Hons) in Intelligent Robotics Engineering programme is the first of its kind in Hong Kong and aims to produce highly skilled engineers in the field of intelligent robotics for local and global industries. This programme is expected to stimulate the local economy and contribute to Hong Kong’s re-industrialisation efforts. Graduates of the programme are expected to:
- identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems using innovative robotic technology;
- apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to the development of robot systems;
- design and conduct experiments, analyse data, and interpret results;
- create intelligent robot systems with creative solutions to fulfil specific requirements; and
- effectively use modern engineering tools, techniques, and computational resources.
Programme Characteristics
The curriculum includes a wide range of subjects and areas of interest, ensuring that our students receive a well-rounded education in this cutting-edge field. The key features include:
- Advanced Intelligent Systems: This course delves into the intricacies of designing and developing advanced intelligent systems. Students will explore topics such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cognitive robotics.
- Intelligent Sensing and Actuation Technologies: Students will learn how to integrate sensors, actuators, and other components to enable intelligent decision-making and precise control.
- Robotics and Intelligent Manufacturing: Students will learn about robotic automation, flexible manufacturing systems, and collaborative robots (cobots), and will also explore topics related to human–robot interaction and safety considerations.
- Robot Mechanisms and Motion: Students will gain a deep understanding of the fundamentals of robot kinematics, dynamics, and motion planning, equipping them with the necessary skills to optimise robot performance.
- Networked Robots and IoT: The fusion of robotics and the Internet of Things (IoT) opens up new possibilities for intelligent systems. This course explores the integration of robotics and IoT technologies, enabling students to develop innovative solutions that harness the power of interconnected devices and smart environments.
BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering
Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes
We aim to train professional mechanical engineers capable of using up-to-date technology to solve and manage multidisciplinary engineering problems for various engineering/business sectors. Graduates of the programme are expected to:
- learn to apply scientific principles and carry out engineering analyses and designs to solve complex problems typical of mechanical engineering;
- be able to use computers as tools to solve engineering problems;
- be able to formulate technical problems mathematically and analyse engineering systems;
- be able to correctly select the most suitable materials and methods – i.e., those that are safe, environmentally and aesthetically acceptable, and economically competitive – for systems/products and for their design and manufacture;
- have the skills needed to think innovatively and creatively and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and
- appreciate the ethical and societal responsibilities of engineers, the importance of lifelong learning, the concepts relating to continuous quality improvement, and the continuing effect of globalisation of the design, manufacture, and marketing of technical goods and services.
Programme Characteristics
After receiving a broad and solid foundation in areas such as physics, mathematics, computing, engineering sciences, design and manufacturing, our students are able to apply their knowledge and skills to the following clusters:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Environmental and Energy Engineering
- Manufacturing, Materials and Mechanics
In both programmes:
- we use a teaching approach focused on learning outcomes;
- students are required to complete industrial training and Work-Integrated Education; and
- students can also opt for summer placements in local industries or overseas companies.
All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum. Towards the end of year one, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty of Engineering. Those who wish to change to another choice need to join a competitive process through a ranking assessment.
Professional Recognition
Accreditation will be sought from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) when the first cohort of graduates for the BEng (Hons) in Intelligent Robotics Engineering programme is produced.
The BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering programme has received full accreditation from HKIE.

Graduates of the BEng (Hons) in Intelligent Robotics Engineering have promising career prospects in robotics design and development, automation engineering, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing. Their expertise in integrating robotics with engineering principles and experience in executing robotics projects enable them to excel as robotics engineers or automation specialists. The programme provides graduates with a solid understanding of robotics engineering and its practical applications, enabling them to pursue roles as robotics engineers.
In addition to contributing to the industry as skilled engineers, graduates have the potential to venture into entrepreneurship. By leveraging their knowledge of technology and innovation, graduates can start their own companies specialising in the design and creation of cutting-edge robot systems.
BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering
Equipped with broad and solid knowledge in engineering and science, as well as a strong ability to apply their knowledge and skills to tackle complex multidisciplinary engineering problems, our graduates can start their careers as mechanical engineers, design engineers, manufacturing and process engineers, service engineers, consultant engineers, or project engineers, among others. They have excellent employment opportunities in aviation and aeronautical engineering industries, public utility companies, building services sector, engineering consultancy firms, construction industry, environmental, electronics and manufacturing industries, information technology sector, government departments, and educational institutions.
Students admitted to the BEng (Hons) ME Scheme study together for the first two years and then complete their preferred degree over the next two years until graduation. Under such an arrangement, students are able to make their choice of studies after gaining a better understanding of the two programmes.
The first year of the Scheme follows the Common Year One curriculum widely adopted throughout the Faculty of Engineering. The curriculum in the second year is common in both degrees. Students acquire knowledge such as fundamentals of physics, mathematics, information technology, materials engineering, engineering mechanics, electricity and electronics, computing, engineering design, and enhancements in mathematics. In addition to studying the same academic subjects, students follow the same industrial training programmes.
BEng (Hons) in Intelligent Robotics Engineering (Subject to approval)
The third and fourth years provide core subjects such as Sensors and Actuators for Mechatronics, Robotics and Computer Integrated Manufacturing, and Robot Mechanisms and Motion; advanced courses including Advanced Robotics Studio and specialisation electives such as Artificial Intelligence in Unmanned Autonomous Systems, Networked Robots and IoT, and Logistics Automation.
In the fourth year of both programmes, students participate in a final-year Capstone Project, possibly with industrial collaboration, to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world scenarios.
BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering
The third and fourth years provide core knowledge in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials, design and manufacturing, dynamics and control, and advanced mathematics, as well as in-depth studies in communication and mechanical engineering. Students can choose different elective subjects in the following clusters:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Environmental and Energy Engineering
- Manufacturing, Materials and Mechanics
Features
The Secondary Major in AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) offers an expanded area of study in addition to mechanical engineering, forming an additional degree option of “a Major in Mechanical Engineering plus a Secondary Major in AI and Data Analytics”. For more details, please click here.
Remarks
Studying for a Secondary Major is a free choice of students and is not mandatory. Only students with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher may be considered for Secondary Major enrolment. Secondary Major programmes may stipulate additional selection criteria for admission and are subject to quota availability. Students must apply to and obtain approval from the Department of Mechanical Engineering no later than the beginning of the second year of study, for admission to a Secondary Major.
