Yan Fu’s Legacy Forum and Exhibition debuts on anniversary day
This year marks the 30th anniversary of PolyU achieving university status. On 25 November, a Flag-Raising Ceremony kicked off the PolyU Anniversary Day celebrations, drawing over a thousand distinguished guests, including political and business leaders, as well as PolyU members, to campus for this significant occasion. The event was followed by the opening ceremony of the Chinese Culture Festival: “Chinese Culture and its Modernisation: Yan Fu’s Legacy”.
Integrating Chinese culture and celebrating Yan Fu’s legacy
Co-organised by PolyU and the Fujian Yan Fu Academic Research Association, Fujian Chuanzheng Culture Management Committee, and Fujian Culture and Economy Exchange Center, the much-anticipated “Chinese Culture and its Modernization: Yan Fu’s Legacy” is a key highlight of the Chinese Culture Festival, coinciding with the celebration of the University’s anniversary.
This event featured an international forum, exhibitions, and public lectures, commemorating Mr Yan Fu, one of the most influential enlightenment thinkers, translators, and educators of the late Qing dynasty. As the first Chinese scholar who introduced Western ideas to China, his pioneering efforts in advancing enlightenment education and the integration of Chinese and Western cultures in modern Chinese history exemplified a spirit of “patriotism, innovation, courage to challenge norms, perseverance, and resilience”. The celebration aimed to promote Chinese cultural excellence whilst inspiring university students to break traditional boundaries.
Dr Lam Tai-fai said that PolyU is committed to promoting Chinese culture with the aim of nurturing students who possess a strong sense of national pride, talent and integrity, and passion for the country and the Nation. | Mr Huang Ping remarked that this event aims to explore the impact of Mr Yan Fu’s thoughts on the modernisation of Chinese culture through a rich and comprehensive exhibition of his life and achievements. |
An exhibition at the PolyU Jockey Club Innovation Tower showcases Mr Yan Fu’s works, documents, photographs and life achievements in various formats. Prof. Wang Gangfeng, representative of the Fujian Chuanzheng Culture Management Committee introduced the exhibition highlights to PolyU management and attending guests. | The “Chinese Culture and its Modernisation: Yan Fu’s Legacy” international forum featured renowned scholars and experts from 18 institutions across Hong Kong, Mainland China, and overseas to discuss the contemporary value of Mr Yan Fu’s patriotic ideas in building Chinese cultural identity. |
A guided tour was organised to showcase Yan Fu’s contributions to advancing Chinese education and bridging the cultural divide between East and West.
A flag-raising ceremony was held to celebrate PolyU’s 30th anniversary as a university, attended by over a thousand distinguished guests, political and business leaders, PolyU’s leaders and the community. |
Promoting Chinese culture through classic recitals
The beauty of Chinese culture is multifaceted, a richness evident in the programmes of PolyU’s Chinese Culture Festival. Recently, over 40 university students from Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland China participated in “The Mainland-Hong-Kong-Macau University Students’ Chinese Classics Recital Show 2024” (the Show), held at PolyU’s Chiang Chen Studio Theatre.
As part of PolyU’s Chinese Culture Festival, the Show fostered exchange and learning opportunities among university students from the regions. |
Co-hosted by PolyU and the Jiangsu Normal University and with The Tertiary Putonghua Recitation Society as a collaborator, the Show aimed to enhance the younger generation’s appreciation of Chinese culture and promote the art of recitation. Staff members and students from Jiangsu Normal University also led Language and Literary Arts Workshops for participants to explore Chinese culture, including classic poetry, drama, sign language, Hanfu, and calligraphy.
PolyU initiated the Chinese Culture Festival earlier this year to enhance awareness and appreciation of China’s rich cultural heritage among the PolyU community. For more details, please visit: https://polyu.me/PolyU-Chinese-Culture-Festival (Chinese version only).
