PolyU Sports Teams won the Grand Slam in the 2021/22 Inter-Collegiate Sports Competitions. Organised by The University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China (USFHK), the annual event is joined by 13 local institutes. Our Sports Teams are the consecutive winners of both the Yearly Men’s and Yearly Women’s Overall Championships since 2017/18 (the competitions in 2019/20 were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

The Teams managed to bring home twelve championships, seven 1st runners-up and two 3rd runners-up places in the 24 sport events they participated in. In addition, Toto Wong captured “USFHK Sports Woman of the Year” and nine PolyU students were named “Most Valuable Players” or “Individual Champion”.

Our student-athletes have the potential to shine on the world stage too. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Toto Wong, Tinky Ho, and Karen Tam were among the representatives of the HKSAR Swimming Team. Toto and Karen participated in the Women’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay while Tinky joined the Women’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay. To be qualified for the Olympics games, they have gone through very demanding training over the years to stay at the top of their fields. PolyU is proud to have supported and witnessed the successful pursuit of their Olympic dream.

In 15th FINA World Swimming Championships 2021 held in Abu Dhabi, PolyU swimmers have set six Hong Kong new records.

In September 2021, PolyU student-athletes participated at the 14th National Games of the People’s Republic of China in Shaanxi Province. Held every four years, the Games is the highest-level multi-sports event in our country joined by elite athletes from different provinces, cities and the Special Administrative Regions.

Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme (SALSA)

SAO continues to support the development of local sports talent through enabling student-athletes to engage in dual-track development in sports and academic pursuits. Since 1998, PolyU has admitted more than 1,200 elite athletes to various full-time programmes through the Outstanding Sportsmen Recommendation Scheme.

PolyU has also joined the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme launched by the UGC for the 2022/23 to 2024/25 triennium. The Scheme aims to support outstanding athletes who aspire to pursue dual-track career developments in the local universities. Under this scheme, upon admitting students with remarkable achievements in sports, PolyU will offer them with personalised support at central and individual levels, including the appointment of Student-Athlete Support Coordinators for one-stop guidance and support from admission to graduation, as well as additional personal teaching assistants to enhance academic support for student-athletes at the individual level.
